Summary

Polished to perfection, the hotly anticipated, best-selling debut

The instant Sunday Times top five best seller

The New York Times number one best seller

One of Buzzfeed’s highly anticipated Booktok reads in 2022

I am your maid.

I know about your secrets. Your dirty laundry.

But what do you know about me?

Molly the maid is all alone in the world. A nobody. She’s used to being invisible in her job at the Regency Grand Hotel, plumping pillows and wiping away the grime, dust and secrets of the guests passing through. She’s just a maid—why should anyone take notice?

But Molly is thrown into the spotlight when she discovers an infamous guest, Mr Black, very dead in his bed. This isn’t a mess that can be easily cleaned up. And as Molly becomes embroiled in the hunt for the truth, following the clues whispering in the hallways of the Regency Grand, she discovers a power she never knew was there. She’s just a maid—but what can she see that others overlook?

Escapist, charming and introducing a truly original heroine, The Maid is a story about how everyone deserves to be seen. And how the truth isn’t always black and white—it’s found in the dirtier, grey areas in between....

"With The Maid comes an exciting and formidable new voice. A gripping and heart-warming whodunnit narrated by an intriguing and original heroine. Skillfully layered and masterfully told. I loved it." (Santa Montefiore)

"This is a fabulous debut, deftly written...I loved following Molly the maid’s struggle to make sense of the world and cheered on those who showed her kindness. The Maid is a delight from start to finish." (Jill Mansell)

"Unlike anything else I’ve read, this kept me up way past lights out. The protagonist is completely original and very endearing. Thoroughly recommend." (Katie Fforde)

Engrossing

I somehow listened to this audiobook in the span of three days despite working full time. Basically, whenever I wasn't at work, I was listening to The Maid! It even ate into my sleep, I just couldn't stop listening!

The narrator in particular was 'delightful' and really brought Molly, the main character, to life. I dare say this is probably a book better to listen to rather than read!

The plot is quite simple but somehow I didn't really care because I became so invested in Molly and the rest of the characters. While it's not explicitly stated, Molly is strongly implied to be on the spectrum so it's nice to see neurodivegent representation in books.

Highly recommended!

Maybe the perfect book

Molly is a maid at the Regency grand hotel and she a specific routine how she cleans rooms and does things on a daily basis and plans journeys down to the second
A central figure in her life is her grandmother but when her grandmother dies Molly has nobody who can advise her and Molly is a bit too trusting and nieve which can lead to her being advantage of by others
The story is told by Molly and Molly finds a dead body in a room the trouble starts for Molly
I found this book a heartwarming story and it could be the perfect locked door crime book and will definitely be one of my highlights of the year and we are only in January I highly recommend this book

I will never look at hotel maid the same way again

I read all sorts of books. If a plotline grabs me then I will buy the book and take a gamble and this is what happened with this book. What a wonderful surprise. This is a book that is fun. You believe in the characters. The main character is fantastic and you really do go through it with her as the book goes through several plots to is turns this not heavy book. This is a fun holiday read no mention of the pandemic masks is just a wonderful book to dive into and I shall really look forward to this authors novel.

The narration is excellent and I found the book very difficult to put down. The voices were convincing and it was a pleasure to listen to. If, as a reader erratically send a new want to take a gamble on a new author you will not be disappointed with this new book. It says in the blurb that this is being made into a movie. I myself will look forward to seeing this on the big screen and I can see why this was snapped up by a network. It's a great fun story and I really enjoyed it.

After reading this book. Whenever you stay in a hotel, this book will always bring to mind. I won't ruin the story, but trust me, you will think twice before you leave your room knowing a maid is coming to tidy up!

Awful hyped rubbish

Maid is autistic ? Speak and actions are not like any housekeeping I’m aware of, this character is very reminiscent of how Adam Sandler played “The Waterboy” …. Gran use to say . Incredibly annoying to listen to .

Engaging

This book is not my usual read at all and I was taken up by the hype but how glad am I. I couldn’t put it down and the narrator certainly added to my enjoyment. It’s hard to say more really without giving things away so I won’t except to say get it and listen. You may find it a little hard going to start with but persevere it’s well worth it.

Dissappointed

This book is boring, no nicer way to put it. I find it difficult to understand the hype.
The narrator is excellent, the story is well written but it is tedious and despite my best efforts I returned it. I found some of the scenes frustrating to say the least, a little bit too naive and charming.
I don't normally write reviews, I pop up a star rating but I would just like to help balance reviews here as I would not recommend this book

Worth the hype.

When you listen to a lot of books and think they’re five star worthy until you actually hear a five star worthy book!

I enjoy psychological/domestic thrillers and was a little put off this book as I thought it might be a touch too whimsical and twee for me. I also struggle with American narrators as I often find a certain robot tone present which stops me immersing myself in the story. The narration is incredible here, it’s a joy, as the the entire book. I haven’t enjoyed a book so much for a few years.

As a note … my mum recently died and I’ve been devastated. This book was such a comfort to me at an awful time and I will never forget how beautifully it was written and with such heart. I shall miss Molly the maid and her grandmother very much as they were such beautifully well written characters it’s just impossible to dare imagine they aren’t real. I shall take a little of who they are into my heart.

This is a must read. 💖🌺🌸

Maybe I missed something…

I found this book boring and so, so predictable. I listened through to the end (on 1.5 speed) to see if anything surprising happened. It did not.

The narrator was very generic to me.

Disappointed

I read the reviews and was excited to start this book … I found the cliques quotes phrases really annoying I Carnt believe the character coujd ever be that naive. This book went on and on about the cleaning far too much the story line just was blah blah blah . I hate leaving bad reviews but I can not lie I didn’t like this book at all .

Delightful

The main character of this novel is Molly Gray. She is somewhere on the Asperger's syndrome spectrum: highly intelligent, but unsure of the people and circumstances around her. She feels most comfortable in a set routine and is a germaphobe. These traits make her perfect for her job as a maid at the Grand Regency Hotel, a five star boutique hotel for the rich. Molly, abandoned by her parents and raised by her now deceased Gran, relishes nothing better than dusting, changing linens, vacuuming, waxing and polishing. The reader encounters the other hotel staff and follows Molly's quotidian routine, until one day, Molly finds a guest dead in bed. Now it is the reader, who finds himself in baffling circumstances!

The Canadian author of this debut novel, has been a long time editor for other novels. This story is fast paced and all the characters are well developed. As Molly comes to realize even about herself, "People are a mystery that never can be solved." What a "delightful" listen!
Lauren Ambrose was amazing with the delivery of the story

A wonderful book.

Do yourself a favor and dive into the book immediately! It will not disappoint. Loved the narrator too.
