About this listen

Anita Topaz, Queen of the Bodice Rippers, is deliberately a woman of mystery. But pressure is mounting for Anita to reveal herself to her clamoring public. It's scrutiny that writer Paris Ellison can't allow, especially since the glamorous "Anita" is a work of pure fiction.

Lady Diana Beckinsale excels at disappearing into a good role. Especially if that role gets her close to certain objects she desires. When Diana proposes the perfect solution to Paris' predicament, Paris is less than enthusiastic. She can't let someone as unsettling and observant as Diana get too close.

But Diana is persistent. After all, if she and the handsome, secretive Paris both get what they want out of an unorthodox arrangement, then it's a win-win for them both.

Not my favourite

I love the Karin Kallmaker books I’ve listened to so far, but this was my least favourite. I didn’t gel well with the two main characters and wasn’t wildly enthusiastic about the storyline. Abby is by far and away my number 1 narrator, but as a Brit, her British accents on this and other novels make me cringe and are really distracting

Clever women

Karin Kallmaker’s books have clever and capable women with strong story lines. This was another and I was particularly pleased to see the return of Lisa (from Warming Trend) though more would have been better.

recommended

My second by Karin and with the incomparable narration by Abbey Craden also as an audio included title couldn't be better.

Beautifully written and performed.

I have read a number of Karin Kallmaker's books and they are all well written with decent stories. This one I think is possibly her best. It is really very well written with rich and interesting characters. She shows an economy and precision of language to capture a moment or emotion concisely without belabouring the point.

Abby Craden as usual has performed these characters exquisitely. I particularly liked the voice and accent she has given Lady Diana Beckinsale.

Not a great one for delicate UK and Irish ears

I enjoyed the story, and I’ve listened to many Abby Craden narrations and think she is excellent but the accents were a bit wince worthy. I’m guessing this happens all the time to speakers of other languages and I’m just not used to it as an entitled Brit but it was a bit distracting 😊

Badly spoiled by Abby Cradey's atrocious accent

Karin Kallmaker romances are a real find and this one is a treat. What a shame, though, that the writing is ruined in audiobook form by Abby Craden's unbelievably dreadful British English and Irish English accents.
The producer must also take some of the blame. It is incomprehensible to me, and such a shame, that a voice artist who is unable to do believable accents is hired to narrate a novel that features both British English and Irish English speakers.

Easy to follow sweet story

Usually I love a narration by Abby Craden but the English accents need a lot of work. Story a bit light and fluffy for this author but nice overall.

Cute story but oh that accent made my teeth itch!

Nice story, great characters. I really felt them. But why oh why can't we have a performer who can manage even a vague approximation of an English accent - expecially given that accents are a feature of the narrative? I can live with the clichés and the inaccuracies around being British but the mangled accent was so distracting. Such a shame!

I was utterly bored

Unfortunately this was not for me. I felt bored and had to speed up or I would have dnf it.
The overall story could have been interesting but I just didn’t like it and didn’t connect with the characters.
I got this audiobook because it’s narrated by Abby Craden, didn’t realise it was a FF story. Unfortunately, I haven’t had much luck with those.
I still love Abby’s voice and she is a great narrator, but I hope she gets cast in better stories in the future.
