Summary

What makes an Ice Queen?

Neve Blackthorne, head of one of the most successful Studios in Hollywood, is the one to rule them all. Powerful, beautiful, and aloof, she's ruthless, yet irresistible. Above all, she has an unquenchable survival instinct.

Surely a fleeting entanglement with one Audrey Avens, a bright, young, rising star in her company, won't bring down the Wicked Queen of Tinseltown. Or will it?

Neve's public persona has no chink in the untouchable armor, but when the lights go out and the cameras stop rolling, what becomes of an Ice Queen whose heart is ruled by love and fear?

Contains mature themes.

high angst

First couple of hrs I nearly returned, depressed listening, but I've loved milennas' work so persevered, as the story unfolds more indepth and explanatory, neve fights her fear of rejection, pulls off a coo, and shows a humanity side hidden inside herself,
but the last 3hrs are spectacular, the build up of all the angst like a climax itself, and finally her sons' humour at a livestream and tweets , I felt like lighting a cigarette.

Incredible

Hard to listen to at some points, but it was so different and interesting getting to listen to the side of ice queen and the thoughts and journey of her, compared to usually getting the other side of things and always wondering why the other people do what they do.

The story jumps around a few times so you really need to concentrate or you'll lose track.

The details and imagination that went into this, and the authors other books, are amazing. Very much not a typical wlw book where you know what's going to happen after the first chapter. Not that I dislike those books but I was getting slightly bored. This was just near perfection, such a great book.

Angst a’plenty

Wonderful book, but the angst is so high it almost broke me. If you like this sort of thing then you’ll have a wonderful time listening to this. Abby Craden is fantastic as usual.

Another wonderful story by MM. How on earth does she do it? Beautifully narrated, as usual by AC.

Wow

It's hard to describe this story.
It's infuriating, heartbreaking and very beautiful.
Milena McKay writes such emotive beautiful stories, nobody else compares.
What now... have listened to all her books.

Well worth a listen

Read some negative reviews however patience is a virtue, especially when it comes to this book. Very different to any other lesbian audiobook, this was refreshing, I absolutely loved it. Beyond the first few chapters and I became hooked.

nothing happens

I'm into chapter 3 and nothing has happened yet, except for various sex scenes, and the main character talking to her shrink with a really bad supposedly posh accent. The sex scenes are completely without context, just graphic descriptions of what they were doing. if you like listening to porn without context, you'll might like this, but somehow it doesn't sound very erotic or even sensual, just a statement of acts, they did a, then b, then c, then d. I normally like Abbey Craden's narration, but this is so bad even Abbey can't saved it.

Another Knock-out Book from Mckay!

This is the second book from Milena Mckay I've listened to, and like with everything, when your first experience is mindblowing, you're always appriensive when you listen to or read the author's next book. Especially, when your first experience is the incomparable work of art that is "The Headmistress". However, all my fears were washed away with the complex, emotional, moving and beautiful story that is "A Whisper Of Solace".

Although, both of Mckay's books feature an age gap relationship, between a powerful, wealthy "ice queen" and a young, stunning, yet average woman that challenges said "ice queen", that is where the similarities of Milena's 2 books end. In fact, I was taken aback by the rawness and grit of this wonderful book. Not only does this story have a emotional, albeit toxic (at times) romance, but it also sheds light on the tragic war mental illness and trauma can be raging inside a person. Neve's journey was beautiful, raw, moving and realistic. Milena had me laughing, crying and my heart pounding for a variety of different reasons. The only downside, I wish there had been another chapter, as I felt everything was tied up quite abruptly. That and I just didn't want to let go of Neve and Audrey.

With the exception of the terrible Scottish accent, Abby's narration, like everything she performs, was sublime. I felt every emotion, distinct characters and scenes as if I were standing there among all the action.

A must listen!

This book is one of my favourite this year. It’s one of the best books I’ve read and I didn’t think it could get any better, I was wrong.
Abby Craden has taken these phenomenal characters and brought them alive in the most delightful and seductive way. She nailed every character in this book, and gave them all the most perfect voice.

Milena McKay is one of my favourite Authors and when she teams up with Abby it makes her books all the more magnificent!

Don’t miss out on this outstanding audio masterpiece!

Five stars isn't nearly enough!

While I thought I knew how deeply I felt about this novel from reading it earlier this year, I realize now that it was mere infatuation. In the brilliantly voiced performance of Abby Craden, I'm full blown in love - like marry me and have my children in love. I truly cannot say enough how perfectly Abby captured and conveyed these unforgettable characters. There were moments so beautifully done that I actually got the chills. This audio has moved into my all-time top five. I would happily listen to it again now after just finishing it, but I think I'll save it for a special treat.

Original review of the novel:

A Whisper of Solace had me after the first three sentences. So intriguing and completely original, I knew something new and different was coming and couldn’t wait to see where it would take me.

Hollywood studio executive Neve Blackthorne is ruthless. Driven. An ice queen to give Natalya Tsvetnenko from Requiem for Immortals a run for her money.

She doesn’t show weakness. Ever. Women with her level of power would be eaten alive if they did. But she has it - in spades - for the talented and beautiful Audrey Avens, the junior communications executive for her studio, with whom she’s been having an affair for the last four months. It’s not just a weakness - Neve is completely consumed by her. And that just will not do. To sustain her entertainment empire she needs to stay focused, and her near obsession with Avens cannot be allowed to interfere with that. Those familiar with her ambition know she is no one to be trifled with, and she will crush anyone that stands in her way.

McKay tells Neve's story from her point of view, which makes it all the more intriguing, fascinating, frustrating and heartbreaking. She does much of it through a series of therapy sessions where Neve hopes to learn how to gain some self control where Audrey is concerned. Through these interactions, which begin each chapter, we learn that there is much more to Neve's fears than she's initially willing to admit and as each layer is revealed, we get to know the woman behind the facade.
Those who have read the author’s first two novels know how beautifully McKay can write. I found myself highlighting passage after passage of insights or phrases that struck me throughout this book, which is something I never do.

Solace is high in angst and at times actually painful to read - but it’s a masterful character study that will get inside of you and not let go. Neve exhibits such cruelty and self sabotage at times that you just want to throttle her to within an inch of her life. But the writing and the storytelling is so superb that you just have to hang on and go along for the ride.

And lord have mercy, the passion between Neve and Audrey? The sex? Rarely has chemistry been written this spectacularly.
On a bit of a lighter note, there’s a bit of cheek here and there that I found to be an interesting choice, and fans of McKay’s work will find wonderful Easter eggs spread throughout.

While Neve and Audrey’s long road to happiness is not an easy one, it's most certainly a journey worth taking in the end.

Third book was just as good as the first two

This is the first review i have written after reading 20 or so books in this genre over the past month or two…But even though I hate how the ice queen is used so heavily in books, I did not mind it. I did however feel that all the things said queen may be worried about where just for a queen to have something to loose to try and make ice queen believable.

I did however feel at some points I just wanted to jump ahead to see how the book ended. But after putting the book down for a bit I’m glad I did not not skip ahead. Well worth my preorder. And well worth taking a chance if you have read either of the other two books by her, give this one a shot and you won’t be disappointed… plus who can’t hate Abby as the reader!

It’s Long

Beginning this story I found myself somewhat bored up til the 4/5 chapter. The dialog seemed a bit technical and somewhat confusing for me. After that there was more to the characters and their interactions.

The MC is such a terror showing no kindness towards the people who she interacted with. Later on you will eventually learn of the PTSD she is suffering and lack of self-worth but I don’t want to give too much. It became exasperating at how she seemed to be on a journey to self destruct which became even more exasperating during most of the story. About the middle I even consider just putting it aside and not finishing. Know that most of the story carries this theme. Not until the last 30% of the story did I begin to feel invested in completing the story anxious to see what would happen.

By the end I was hooked to finish wondering if it would be a loss for our MC or somehow she would be saved from her destructive life.

I will probably revisit this one simply to really understand what I seemed to have missed in the first few chapters.

It’s a story of a lot of disappointment and
Negative feelings although when I consider the complete story I am very glad I used this credit.

A new author for me perfect narration by AC. I would recommend this but with caution that you may find it hard to stick with it in the beginning but it was worth it.

Amazing

The universe was trying to keep me from finishing listening to this book. My wife, my kids, my mother in law and my incessant work texts that kept interrupting Abby Craden’s delicious tones. I just wanted to be left alone with this story and no one would leave me be. So I’ll be starting it again immediately following this review so I can take it all in again just because that’s the type of book this is. One you can start over and over and never get enough. It was fantastic. Milena - please hurry I need more of your audiobooks :) and Abby never stop because your story telling gets me through my work days!

Great story if

If it didn’t drag on for almost 12 hours. I had to skip ahead so many chapters and the characters hadnt made any progress. It’s very repetitive, you could take it about 6 chapters and still know exactly what’s going on. I wish whoever the editor was would’ve cut it back some. Otherwise it would be a fantastic story! Its honestly a great story if it didn’t drag on so much and get to the points.
