Summary

The Sunday Times top 10 best seller

The 'gripping, atmospheric and ultimately deeply satisfying' (Val McDermid) new novel from Jane Harper, author of the Sunday Times top 10 best sellers - with combined sales of over a half a million copies - The Dry and Force of Nature.

He had started to remove his clothes as logic had deserted him, and his skin was cracked. Whatever had been going through Cameron's mind when he was alive, he didn't look peaceful in death.

Two brothers meet at the remote border of their vast cattle properties under the unrelenting sun of the outback. In an isolated part of Australia, they are each other's nearest neighbour, their homes hours apart.

They are at the stockman's grave, a landmark so old that no one can remember who is buried there. But today, the scant shadow it casts was the last hope for their middle brother, Cameron. The Bright family's quiet existence is thrown into grief and anguish.

Something had been troubling Cameron. Did he choose to walk to his death? Because if he didn't, the isolation of the outback leaves few suspects....

Strongly recommended

A gripping, unfolding story . The location is set so well I could visualise the outback and the characters fleshed out so that I could understand their struggles . Slowly the truth is revealed but still the ending took me quite by surprise

Brilliant story telling

A great story, well told and brilliantly narrated. I loved the way the characters and their stories are gradually revealed and how the reader is immersed in the Australian landscape.

Good story

this is well worth reading but felt shorter than The Dry so for audio book price I felt a little short changed but was still a good mystery.

Disappointing

An excellent narration. Up until three quarters of the way through I was really enjoying this book. It seemed like a deep murder mystery, but towards the end it started to drift into a chick lit, type of novelette, or even a fairy story. It was shame that the ending of the book fell flat.

Subtle, meaty story with unexpected twists.

Runs the full gambit of a Jane Eyre style tale - characters that interest, a wide ranging story with detailed characters. But it’s modern, full of wisdom and has complex characters drawn in depth. Narrated by a real Aussie as it’s set in the outback. Brilliant and engaging from first to last word.

A stunning book

I have really enjoyed both of Harper's previous books, but this one is on another level. A compelling, yet simple story, brilliantly crafted. Jane Harper paints a vivid picture of a a tough, lonely and desolate existence in an unforgiving land. I found myself totally absorbed in Nathan Bright's world and the mystery of what befell his brother. It is, quite simply, one of the finest books I've ever read.
