Summary

Escape into the enchanting world of The Watchmaker of Filigree Street. This extraordinary sequel transports listeners to Japan, where time, destiny and love collide to electrifying effect

'A Japan that never was, a future lost, ghosts that are not dead ... not even a partial list of ingredients can do justice to this wonderful cake of a book ... A time-defying thriller' ROBIN HOBB

For Thaniel Steepleton, an unexpected posting to Tokyo can’t come at a better moment. The London fog has made him ill and doctor’s orders are to get out.

His brief is strange: the staff at the British Legation have been seeing ghosts, and his first task is to find out what’s going on. But staying with his closest friend Keita Mori in Yokohama, Thaniel starts to experience ghostly happenings himself. For reasons he won’t say, Mori is frightened. Then he vanishes.

Meanwhile, something strange is happening in a frozen labour camp in northern Japan. Takiko Pepperharrow, an old friend of Mori’s, must investigate.

As ghosts appear across Tokyo and the weather turns bizarrely electrical, Thaniel grows convinced that it all has something to do with Mori’s disappearance – and that Mori might be in far more trouble than any of them first thought.

Another Extraordinary Book!!

What a superb sequel to Watchmaker of Filigree Street. I am so so pleased I downloaded this straight after I had finished the first book. They are linked and follow on beautifully. This author is beyond anything I have read before. I was so pleasantly surprised, I read the first just because I liked the title and thought I would give it a go. I am just blown away at the depth of the writing, the plots, the characters and above all the storyline. Inside the world of this book is fantastic it immerses you totally and leaves you wanting more. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Loved it.

I have really enjoyed this book, possibly even more than the first one. I just wish it had lasted longer.
I am keeping my fingers crossed for more from this author and a third in this series.
The narrator is very easy to listen to, with a lovely voice and clear speech.
Highly recommended.

An instant love

As much as I loved The Watchmaker of Filigree Street, I ended up loving the sequel even better. Fantastic imagery, descriptions of Japanese setting, culture, food, houses! Superb! The story is beyond intriguing, accompanied by Pulley's typical humour and palpably real depictions of the moments of a heartbreak. I thoroughly appreciated beautiful inputs on Japanese folklore and history. An absolute gem of a book that made me fall in love with Japan, start cooking Japanese dishes and googling "gorgeous Japanese men", so I could silently daydream.

Great follow up to the first book

wonderful narrator, enticing story, slightly repetitive writing style. If you've read the first book and enjoyed it you'll also enjoy this one.

Loved it

I read one of Pulley's other books and liked it, but didn't get pulled in like I did with this one. The narration was pretty perfect, and added to drawing you in to the story and characters. This might be one of the few books I revisit in future.

beautiful sequel

I didn't think that the watchmaker of filagree street could be followed but she's done it! I can see myself listening to them both again and again... now I'm just praying for a third. Definitely worth a listen for the story and the performance, Thomas Judd is my favourite voice artist and he's perfect reading this book

Phenomenal

I enjoyed the first book but this was something else. I've just finished, I have tears in my eyes and I wanted to give it a standing ovation.

I think the first book was definitely needed in order to lay the foundation and then this one took off.

The aura of being in Japan in this story was so detailed without being overly descriptive, each different environment felt so real that I could practically smell it - if I didn't have the sense my nose was too cold. Every detail was so well thought out and not a word wasted. Plus the story was impeccable, I've honestly not enjoyed a book like that in a long time.

My only complaint: could have been more Katsu.

Every bit as enthralling as Filigree Street

Loved story, characters, descriptive passages. Filigree Street questions now resolved! Narration equally elegantly understated again.

Very good

Enjoyed this book almost as much as 'Filigree Street' but less quirky magic in this one...still written well, and just love this narrator for these characters...wonderful job!
