Story
The fire that was to change so many lives started with a single shaft of lightning. It struck on a still and moonless night and cocooned for a while in the heart of an ancient pine. The woman camped nearby with her group of troubled teenagers slept on, hearing nothing. But one among them would be lost forever. For soon the pupa of fire would hatch and engulf the entire mountain. Into this inferno will come the Smoke Jumper.

Story
Smart, headstrong Kirabo is raised by her grandparents in rural Uganda. But as she enters her teens, she starts to feel overshadowed by the absence of the mother she has never known. At once epic and deeply personal, The First Woman is the bold and piercing story of one young girl’s discovery of what it means to be a woman in a family, a community and a country that seem determined to silence her. Steeped in the rich folklore of Uganda but with an eye firmly on the future, Jennifer Makumbi has written a sweeping, effervescent tale of longing, femininity and courage.

For in Hope, Montana, a century ago, the wolf was slaughtered to extinction, and though they're now protected by law as an endangered species, the old hatred runs deep.

A beautiful book
I've read this book twice now, and decided to reread it via audible. It's one of my favourite books and Nicholas Evans is my favourite author. Compelling, dramatic, heart wrenching, heart warming and relatable. As ever Evans' detailing is brilliant and you'll be drawn in by each of the characters including the four legged ones. I've thoroughly enjoyed listening to this novel a second time and have been just as drawn in and unable to switch off as I was the first time reading.

Sad but wonderful
I read this book years ago and was looking for an easy listen. I remembered that I really enjoyed reading it (just like the Horse Whisperer)but I couldn’t remember much about it apart from the wolves. I absolutely loved listening to the story. I think the narrator has the characters just right - although the Luke in my head was quite different. It’s traumatic and sad but also fantastic. I loved it again.

Thoroughly enjoyable listen.
Laurel's performance is easily listened to, and this story is perfect for me. Wolves. Conservation. Lost souls. And the spectacular backdrop of Montana. It's got me looking into wolf tracking trips in Yellowstone. Which is going to cost me a lot more than this thoroughly enjoyable audible book. I've been inspired.
