Summary

London, 1964

Psychopathic gangster Ronnie Kray has a “List” of persons who have “taken liberties” and who are to be disposed of, and now barrister Charles Holborne finds his name at the top of the List. He can’t spend his life looking over his shoulder, but how to take the fight to the two most violent gangsters in London?

There seems no obvious danger in taking the murder brief that good fortune lands on his desk. But the accused is The Lighterman…a man with whom Charles has history…

Critic reviews

“An excellent thriller, with the Kray twins providing a palpable sense of menace in the background, great action on the river and some gripping courtroom drama.” (Crime Review)

“There is a hint of John le Carré in this tough legal thriller that packs a punch as the reader is swept along towards a fascinating conclusion.” (Dorset Book Detective

"One of the key attractions of Simon's Charles Holborne series is the depiction of London, in all it gangland glamour and swinging 60s glory. He brings the past back to life across a beautifully rendered 60s landscape, and delivers a thrilling piece of thriller fiction that will excite any fan of the genre." (Book2Book

Another great book

Another brilliant story, sadly let down by dodgy editing.

Simon, you’re a great storyteller but absolute pony at narration.

You write ‘em and let someone else narrate ‘em- you know it makes sense.

SB

Struggled to finish. Narrator and recording very poor compared to Colin Mace who did the first 2 books. The plot was also boring and not of the standard of The Brief and The Honest Man which I enjoyed. Sorry can't recommend it

Gutted!

If I had noticed before purchasing this 3rd book that Colin Mace was not the narrator...I would have been hesitant. I am only about 90mins in and my opinion is that Simon Michael has completely ruined this audible version. He does not possess the talent of Colin Mace as a narrator and all the characters sound the same and I am not sure how much more I will listen to. I think I may purchase the remaining books so that the characters brought alive by Colin Mace remain in my imagination. The story line however is brilliant and Simon Michael is a wonderful author.

Potential great read

I downloaded the 3rd in the series of Charles Holborne as I had absolutely loved books 1 & 2. However, I am going to have to order book 3 in paperback form or ebook. I really struggled with the author, Simon Michael's narration. He is a fabulous writer, but an actor he is not. His voices were the same and I struggled to differentiate between who was speaking. I was grateful that the 3rd book had been recorded, but very sad that the original narrator, Colin Mace, a super actor and a wonderful narrator wasn't signed up to record the 3rd book. Off to order it in paperback....the story so far was gripping

Please record the next one soon!

I listened to the first two books free and was so caught up with the lead character I bought the third book as soon as I'd finished book two. Like all good crime thrillers you do need to suspend belief at times but, such is the writing you don't have time to question many of the actions because of the absorbing storyline.

Colin Mace does a good job narrating the first two books and his narration is partly why I was so eager to hear what happens next. Having listened to several audio series where the narrator is changed part way through a series I was a little concerned as to whether a different narrator would spoil my enjoyment of a series. I needn't have worried as Simon Michael does an excellent job of reading his own book!

I do have a couple of gripes. None of which impact on the story or the narrator.

1. Performance wise - there were a couple of line which were repeated. Not a biggie but, it was a little annoying.
2. There are four more books in the series and none of them are on audible. :(

Question: Will the other four books in the series be released on audio any time soon, or should I buy the remainder of the series on Kindle?

Good story

I’m enjoying the book but it’s not the same narrator and I can’t take to the style of narration! Might have to get it on kindle and read it instead.

Shame they did jot use the actor who recorded the previous books

Loved the previous books and that previously read by an actor which worked much better than the author reading.

Great story shame about the narration

The first 2 books are excellent and came to life with the narration of Colin Mace. This version is just lifeless and dull I am afraid. Wasted a credit which is incredibly annoying.
