About this listen

The journey that began in The Shadow of What Was Lost and continued in An Echo of Things to Come now comes to its spectacular conclusion in The Light of All That Falls, the final chapter of the Licanius Trilogy by acclaimed epic fantasy author James Islington.

After a savage battle, the Boundary is whole again - but it may be too late. Banes now stalk the lands of Andarra, and the Venerate have gathered their armies for a final, crushing blow.

In Ilin Illan, Wirr fights to maintain a precarious alliance between Andarra's factions of power. With dark forces closing in on the capital, if he cannot succeed, the war is lost.

Imprisoned and alone in a strange land, Davian is pitted against the remaining Venerate. As he tries to keep them from undoing Asha's sacrifice, he struggles to come to terms with his own path and all he has learned about Caeden, the friend he chose to set free.

And finally, Caeden is confronted with the reality of a plan laid centuries ago - heartbroken at how it started and devastated by how it must end.

I have nothing bad to say about this book. If you liked the previous two books then you'll love this book. If you've not read them then let me assure you it's an amazing trilogy without a single weak book which is vary rare in the fantasy genre. This series as a whole is edited perfectly. It cuts out faff that doesn't pertain to the plot while still fleshing out the world perfectly. it's the antithesis of many fantasy books which are lumbering 10 book series with 50 hours a book. This series is not that.

perfection

So overall I am happy, but it is very complex and there is a lot of, what feels like, side quests. The overall idea is still very sound, and it is what pulled me through. I did like the sub stories as I ended up treating them as their own little, short story.

I checked the wiki and there are others that are asking questions about how the rules of the place really work. It does feel like there are a few loopholes and mistakes, but without really digging in and checking, I will have to leave them as authors license. Time travel always has issues, but in this case, this is really nicely solved by saying the universe is on tracks already so time travel and predictions can all work.

But one key one issue for me was ‘so where does Licanius end up’?

Complex to the end with reasonable resolution

The beginning of the book takes a bit long, but it is worth it at the end.

Good story and storytelling.
