Summary

Solve the murder to save what's left of the world.

Outside the island there is nothing: the world destroyed by a fog that swept the planet, killing anyone it touched. On the island: it is idyllic. 122 villagers and 3 scientists, living in peaceful harmony. The villagers are content to fish, farm and feast, to obey their nightly curfew, to do what they’re told by the scientists.

Until, to the horror of the islanders, one of their beloved scientists is found brutally stabbed to death. And they learn the murder has triggered a lowering of the security system around the island, the only thing that was keeping the fog at bay.

If the murder isn’t solved within 92 hours, the fog will smother the island – and everyone on it.

But the security system has also wiped everyone’s memories of exactly what happened the night before, which means that someone on the island is a murderer – and they don’t even know it…

An outstanding high concept murder mystery from the Sunday Times bestselling and Costa Book Award winning author of The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. An ingenious puzzle, an extraordinary backdrop, an audacious solution.

Most enjoyable

I snapped this up after reading the blurb, as it sounded exactly my cup of tea. It was just that; a post apocalyptic murder mystery on an island. Adjoa Andoh was fantastic as always. I wish she could read all my audiobooks. She always has such distinct voices for each character, that it is easy to keep track of who's speaking, plus giving extra depth to the characters. The murder mystery part was a little too convoluted at times and I found it a bit difficult to keep track of who did what and when, but there were some well-paced reveals of the island's mysteries along the way, all rounded off with a very satisfying conclusion. I wish Audible had included a pdf of the map that Stuart mentioned in the acknowledgements, partly because it would just be nice to see, but also might have helped keep better track of events.

Excellent! Highly recommended.

I loved this! A perfect blend of sci-fi and murder mystery. The main character was endearing and the narration was very good. I kind of saw the ending coming, but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the story.

Clever story with stunning narration

I love Stuart Turton's puzzle-style novels. Last Murder is clever and well-thought through with just enough information revealed to keep you listening for more. The narration is outstanding and really adds to the story.

The Reader brought Abi to life

I really enjoyed this book! I think I wouldn’t have been able to follow it as well if I had read it. I’m so pleased I listen to it instead, the reader really brought the world and characters to life

Gripping, surprising story

I really enjoyed this book despite it not being my usual type (more straightforward crime/thriller novels). So glad I gave it a listen. It took a couple of chapters to get into it and to get to grips with the characters and idea of the island and the villagers and then I couldn't wait to find out what was happening next and who the killer was. Original, clever and gripping. Enjoyed the narration too.

Cracking story

I read this based on how much I enjoyed The seven deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, I really enjoyed this one as well. Would love them to be pulled together, the authors imagination is fantastic!

Keeps you guessing!

The first of his boos that I’ve listened to. But I’ll definitely look out for more! Great writing style, well performed and lots of twists made for a great listen

'Stu' does it again

Another outstandingly original whodunnit from Stuart Turton. Neither this nor his preceding book are quite as painfully mind-twisting as his debut, but to be honest I'm thankful for that - I really did hurt my brain on that one.

This book, set in the last island outpost of humanity in a post-unusual-apocalypse world, is beautifully read by Adjoa Andoh, although occasionally the strong accents she employed for some of the main characters made it hard to catch all of the dialogue.

His writing style is as addictive and entertaining as ever, the complex plotting typically meticulous, the reveals still surprising no matter how hard I tried to work out what was going on. One day...

My one very minor regret is that the cause of the aforementioned apocalypse didn't form part of the denouement - but perhaps that would have been too horrific an act to have attributed to any of even the more amoral of the likely suspects.

Full marks for each book being in a very different context - what unites them is his engaging writing style, and that each is a complex knot of mystery, alternately tightened and loosened throughout until the heart of the matter is finally exposed.

Can't wait for the next one...
