Summary

From a remarkable new voice in suspenseful women's fiction comes an emotionally searing drama about a woman who risks her life to discover the devastating truth about her family.…

Humanitarian aid worker Gia Andrews chases disasters around the globe for a living. It's the perfect lifestyle to keep her far away from her own personal ground zero. Sixteen years ago, Gia's father was imprisoned for brutally killing her stepmother. Now he's come home to die of cancer, and she's responsible for his care - and coming to terms with his guilt.

Gia reluctantly resumes the role of daughter to the town's most infamous murderer, a part complete with protesters on the lawn and death threats that are turning tragedy into front-page news. Returning to life in small-town Tennessee involves rebuilding relationships that distance and turmoil have strained, though finding an emotional anchor in the attractive hometown bartender is certainly helping Gia cope.

As the past unravels before her, Gia will find herself torn between the stories that her family, their friends and neighbors, and even her long-departed stepmother have believed to be real all these years. But in the end, the truth - and all the lies that came before - may have deadlier consequences than she could have ever anticipated.…

Narration is really, really bad.

The "southern" accents used were contrived and stilted. After a couple of hours with a very slow-moving story and uninteresting characters, I gave up. I would have stuck it out if the narration wasn't so hard to listen to. Her last two books were so good, I thought I'd try an earlier book, but this was nothing like Dear Wife or The Marriage Lie.

Not worth reading

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Maybe younger readers would enjoy it more.

What could Kimberly Belle have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I did not get much from Gia's character. Never got to care one way or the other about her and her relationship with Jake didnt seem to be based on much but sex.

What didn’t you like about Janet Metzger and Mary Robinette Kowal ’s performance?

The narration/accents were just hard to listen to.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

not much!

Any additional comments?

Waste of time.

Cheesy, Drawn Out, Lack of Character Development

I’m 4 hours into this audiobook and am struggling to keep listening. The story isn’t moving and there is no depth to the characters. For the subject matter there is too much emphasis on the narrator and her sex life.

Suspense from front cover to back! Lies, betrayal, lust, love and packed full of old fashioned family drama. Well written and performed

Wonderful

Book kept me interested from beginning to end. Found myself staying up late often to listen to the good part, but the whole book was the good part.

The country accents…

I rarely leave reviews, much less bad ones, but I just couldn’t get past the fake country accents. As a native of the South, these accents were so clearly fake it was almost funny. I would’ve preferred them to just speak in their normal voices! It was so distracting! The story was good, but I got about a quarter in and just couldn’t handle the accents anymore. Disappointing, because I’m a Kimberly fan and wish I could’ve finished this one!

Foul language

It was a good story, but I didn’t like the vulgar language. You can write without cursing
