Summary

The international bestseller.

Only a few months after the end of the Second World War, a new battle is beginning in the little village of Chawton. Once the final home of Jane Austen, the Chawton estate is dwindling and the last piece of Austen's heritage is at risk of being sold to the highest bidder....

Drawn together by their love of her novels, eight very different people - from a local farmer to a glamorous film star - must unite to attempt something remarkable. As new friendships form and the griefs of the past begin to fade, they rally together to create the Jane Austen Society and to save the beloved novelist's home and legacy. But can her words change all their lives in return?

A heartbreaking and uplifting novel of hope, loss and love. Perfect for fans of Miss Austen by Gill Hornby and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer

Excellent performance from RCA, story lacking..

The premise was good, but it felt a little incomplete and hurried in parts, alternating with a languid drawn out feeling in others. This made for rather unsettled whole, somewhat saved by good periods of accurate descriptive writing. RCA raised the whole thing above the mediocre, with his multi-faceted and well observed performance.

Perfect literary tonic for 2020

Nostalgia and conventional narrative structure are not normally something I look for in fiction. But - attracted by my enjoyment of Jane Austen’s work - I really enjoyed my time with this group of characters in a small village in post war England. The Jane Austen biographical information and textual analysis were woven into the text in a nuanced way, and the universal themes of grief, pain and lost chances were touching. So maybe I’m going soft, or maybe it’s living through the ubiquitous fear and uncertainty of a global pandemic, but what’s so wrong with a happy ending once in a while?

Enjoyable listen

Enjoyed this book if you're a true Austen fan, you'll love everything Austen in it and especially the character and love story parallels. I think non-fans would maybe not get so much out of it.
Richard Armitage is, as always, exemplary in his reading if story and dialogue. Although, the man could read a shopping list and I would listen! That voice!😁

Couldn't stop listening!!

What an absolutely delightful story, as a Jane Austen fan, I was intrigued to find out what this book had to offer. I have been very pleasantly surprised, the story had depth and feeling that I had tears in my eyes at least 3 times, it is a pleasure to listen to and so very well written (despite a couple of Americanisms, pumps and escrow). I will watch out for the author in the future. The performance by Richard Armitage , as always, brought the characters to life. He conveyed the passion each of the characters have for Jane Austen so beautifully as well as the emotional dilemmas each one of them had to contend with, thus the no less than 3 tearful (joy and sadness) moments! There are so many books I would like to hear him perform, is there a 'suggestion' or 'requests' department??
