About this listen

It was an invite to die for…

When the anonymous invite arrived, we knew exactly who it was from.

Elle Romero, the beautiful, charismatic Texan who burst into our lives when we were teenagers.

We'd gone our separate ways and lost touch. Until now.

Elle, the legendary prankster, is back.

She's invited us all—me, Claire, Lizzie and Megan—to a swanky country house for a reunion.

We arrive excited for a weekend of reminiscing and reconnecting. A chance to step out of our uneventful lives for a while.

But when Elle fails to show up at her own party, we begin to wonder if she's up to her old tricks.

And when a body turns up in the cellar, it seems this time the joke might just be on us…

The Invite is the twisty, addictive new thriller by A J McDine, author of No One I Knew.

Great clever story

Starts out as possible chick lit but really develops into a good story. Recommend it and easy listen too

I’m confused by narrator !

Good story but I’m just so confused! The narrator calls one of the main characters “lizzy” and then in the next sentence chanted it to “Lilly” I keep rewinding to check if I’m missing summat or going mad ! Has anyone else picked up on this ? Otherwise good story & nice little twist

Really wanted to like this book

The book started off well, with a good introduction to the main characters and good narration.
Sadly, part way through, I felt the book lesson its grip on me.
The twists were quite predictable. I questioned why would someone with epilepsy, who was reliant on driving, forget her medication, and then when realising she had forgotten it, not get it sent to her, and just carry on with the weekend, drinking with her friends? More unbelievable, was why 4 intelligent women would stay in a house with all that was going on? There was a missing friend, no housekeeper, a putrid stench from a locked room, no electricity, and no food. I found it a bit far fetched.
The narration (bar a small confusion with one of the friend’s names) was the only reason that I read the book to the end.

Far fetched but fun

Enjoyed this - even though it was quite implausible. Liked the little twist at the end although equally implausible. The negativity around autism a little frustrating.

Really enjoyed this book

I love that this author doesn’t write what you think they might, there’s so many twists and turns and I’m hooked. Brilliant story (ok, you may have to suspend disbelief at some points, but still it’s great) and I can’t wait to download another by this author. Narration was on point, loved the whole thing!

Exciting plot twists

This is my first experience of this author and I am not disappointed.
Individual characters grow throughout the story. School friends reunion turned bad in ways that I didn’t expect.

I listened to this on Audible. There are a couple of minor errors in speech where ‘she’ is referred to as ‘he’ and vice versa. Aside from this, I thoroughly enjoyed it and couldn’t stop listening.

Disappointed it ended but I’ll be searching out others written by this author for sure.

Didn't really make sense overall

Took ages to get going with lots of unnecessary filling out but ended really quickly as if the author ran out of time.

how bad it was

The book started off well, even though the 4 friends involved seemed quite unfriendly to each other, so you have a rough idea that all isn't going to be roses. However as the book progressed, I found myself suspending disbelief on many occasions. A woman who has epilepsy & forgets her meds (& who can't drink alcohol), then proceeds to drink alcohol, the U.S friend who organised the weekend away appears to be playing nasty tricks....so the friends decide to stay (?!), they find a corpse & even though there are no Internet signals, don't collectively walk for help. That's many hours wasted that I'm never going to get back. Sadly I wouldn't recommend

Good Listen

The storyline was good with a nice twist. Well-developed characters with good descriptions of locations etc. I felt that sometimes for a group of “friends” they were a bit mean to each other but I suppose that added to the atmosphere of the story
