Summary

Something is missing in your life. So, you go to a store and buy what you need. You get the flat-packed furniture home, open it up and spread the pieces out on the floor.

But there are no instructions. That is your life. This book is the instructions.

You have everything you need. It’s there on the floor. Getting it to work together in a way which actually solves the problem you started your day with is a huge challenge.

You ask friends. Each of them has a different opinion. You try it their ways. Sometimes you get close. But it’s not right. You laugh at your failures. The problem remains.

A family member drops by. She knows what you should do. You try that too. That doesn’t work either. Which makes you annoyed and frustrated. You tell her to go away.

You sit alone, baffled, frustrated. Lost. Still trying to solve the problem. Still with everything you need spread out on your sitting room floor.

Then a stranger rings your doorbell. He gives you something. It tells you how it works. It is the instructions. You put your furniture together and set it up in the house. The problem is solved. You clear away the mess.

Now everything is better. It’s hard to remember what was missing before, or the confusion you had to deal with.

I am that stranger.

fantastic !****

absolutely fantastic! it makes the complexity of it all so glaringly obvious and easy to understand. the narration is perfect and more importantly real, in that the nuances of pitch make it more natural and easy to listen to, just like a conversation.

Life-changing book

I could not stop listening to this book. It all made so much sense and I like understanding the biological side, rather than trauma and victim language. This will change my life and I am very grateful. I will read again and work through the workbook. Highly recommend. If I had the money I would buy it for all my friends and family!

Simple yet groundbreaking

As a PTSD survivor and therapist, this book explains in clear and useful terms the impact of unprocessed trauma on the nervous system. It validates and points us towards a path to healing and recovery. The author has an exceptional ability to explain complex structures in a simple and accessible way.

Must read for literally everyone

If everyone read this book and applied its teachings, the world would change radically! I am a parenting coach and learning about the nervous system for my own wellbeing and that of my clients. Although the way it is written could seem a bit simplistic for people who already gave a grasp of some of this science, the great thing about it is that it's accessible to anyone and profoundly life-changing if you truly take it on board. I am already recommending this book to my clients.

revolutionary

a clearly set out theory and practical guide to understanding why we live in fearful reaction and how to learn to calmly respond instead. it gathers together so many of the ideas of the moment around body work, the nervous system, mindfulness, and trauma into a clear and very simple model. but best of all it offers a practical way of applying this to ourselves and hope for us all to escape suffering.
