Summary

A renowned psychiatrist reveals how trauma affects children—and outlines the path to recovery.

"Fascinating and upbeat.... Dr. Perry is both a world-class creative scientist and a compassionate therapist." (Mary Pipher, PhD, author of Reviving Ophelia)

How does trauma affect a child's mind—and how can that mind recover? In the classic The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, Dr. Perry explains what happens to the brains of children exposed to extreme stress and shares their lessons of courage, humanity, and hope. Only when we understand the science of the mind and the power of love and nurturing can we hope to heal the spirit of even the most wounded child.

Be prepared

This book is very tough read..but essential if you wish to provide love and support to any child, especially one that has experienced trauma. But here comes the rub; you cannot read this book and fail to realise that almost all of us have had a traumatic childhood. The spectrum is vast of course and most of us will have been developmentally touched only in small ways and will have had sociointeractive experiences which heal us. However, be prepared to find yourself reviewing your youth and subsequent adult experiences in a new light, one that might provide many aha moments. The story however is ultimately positive. It demonstrates how far we have come in understanding the human brain, human development and how simple human needs really are. The challenge is delivering them in a complex modern world. We have far to go, but priorities in raising a new healthy, happy generation are being shifted and the work of millions around the world are hearing the call for change that Dr. Bruce Perry makes such a strong case for in this book.

Fascinating, powerful and moving

With doctors like him the traumatised children of the world have so much more hope.
The stories of trauma or neglect are truly dreadful and you'd be inhumane not to be appalled and upset by the light of the children. However the way that Dr Perry explains how the trauma/neglect that each child suffers then shapes the brain and how it can later be remedied is fascinating.
Highly recommended read for those interested in this area.

A real eye opener.

I have no background in psychology but the series of cases and narrative drive home the intended message of how important early years are in forming the personality traits of all of us. Also, the dedication and focus that some brilliant people have to make life better for others that need it most.

Warm book (despite tragic situations)

Every parent, teacher, social worker, criminologist, neuroscientist, judge, prison officer or anyone with the slightest interest in human nature would probably find this book worth reading. For me it is up there with Etty Hillesum's book of letters and diaries ("An Interrupted Life") as one of the wisest books I have read/listened to in my life.
The cases recounted are positively-framed, while still acknowledging the horrors of the situations. The boy raised as a dog is one of the shorter chapters half way in. This book covers a wide variety of psychological traumas and also sets them into the broader context of how treatment can be improved going forward.
There is lots in here to simply help develop insight into and empathy with other humans.

Fascinating and clear

The mixture of vignettes and psychiatric explanations creat a clear and engaging sequence of unfolding how childhood trauma can effect development, and the things that need to be put in place in order to repair the damage made. As a teacher, I will definitely be investigating more into the methods and support Dr Perry and his team have created.
