Summary

On a cold January night in 1817, former cavalry officer Captain Gabriel Lacey is summoned to the banks of the Thames to identify the body of a young woman. When Lacey looks at the pretty, dead young woman, cut down too soon, he vows to find her murderer.

Lacey's search takes him to the Glass House, a sordid gaming hell that played a large part in the victim's past, as well as to gatherings of the haut ton and the chambers of respectable Middle Temple barristers. Lacey uncovers secrets from the highborn and the low, finds himself drawn deeper into the schemes of the crime lord, James Denis, and explores his tentative new friendship with Lady Breckenridge.

The glass house

Another enjoyable book in the series.
The plots are getting better as the characters unfold.
I recommend this book for all who love a good crime story (not too violent) as well as an historical setting. Perfect!!

Awesome!

Any additional comments?

I have fallen hard for Capt Gabriel Lacy & his heroics! This is not your typical murder mystery....Capt. Lacy always seems to have many twists & turns, but comes out ahead of the game! I loved this book & James Gillies does an awesome job of narrating!

The Glass House

This is the third Captain Lacey story and just as wonderful as the first two. The main characters are likeable and it interesting to see what they do next. The recording is great. I am looking forward to hearing the whole series on Audible.

Captain Lacey's Adventures always delight.

After listening to this wonderful series once ( up to the Alexandria Affair), I'm enjoying listening to the series again. Immersing oneself in the colorful post napoleonic war years and leaving my current troubles behind is a joy. The settings are well researched and the stories both intriguing and believable. I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes good, intelligent mysteries.

Can't get enough of this author/narrator combo!

What made the experience of listening to The Glass House the most enjoyable?

James Gillies. He is a tremendously talented narrator and really brings all of the characters to life. I cannot wait for the later Captain Lacey books to come out on audio!

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love all of them, and I really appreciate that each of the characters continue to grow and develop as the series continues. Ashley Gardner is very skillful in releasing a little bit more of Lacey's backstory as each book progresses. All of the recurring characters make an appearance in this book, including Grenville, Marianne, Louisa, Bartholomew, and of course, the elusive James Denis.

Which scene was your favorite?

Without giving any spoilers, I found the scenes with Captain Lacey and Louisa Brandon to be especially compelling in this book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I cannot answer without giving spoilers, and I don't want to ruin any aspect of the book's plot. I will say that as soon as I finished the book, I did go back and re-listen to a number of scenes that were especially moving or engaging.

Any additional comments?

I love this series! Ashley Gardner's style of writing and her way of crafting a story is exceptional and so enjoyable to read. James Gillies is perfectly suited for these characters and I have enjoyed every minute of listening to his narration. I look forward to more in the Captain Lacey series!

I am hooked on this series.

This is the third Captain Lacey book I have read. I love a good mystery and the plots in these have kept me guessing. The characters are well drawn and believable. Lacey is a wonderful anti-hero, like an Edwardian James Rockford. I wouldn't call them great literature, but they are intelligent and wonderfully entertaining. The narrator's charming British accent (never too thick to understand) is completely appropriate to the stories, and his ability to create distinct voices for each character is superb. I had already downloaded the 4th book before I was finished with this one.
