About this listen
Hoping to put behind him tragedy in his professional life and to resolve the turmoil in his personal life, Reykjavik police officer Guðgeir Fransson has moved as far away from home as he can, marking time in a dead-end job in a small town in eastern Iceland.
His detective's instincts are triggered when he hears about a foreign woman who arrived in this tight-knit community - and then disappeared as suddenly as she had appeared. The trail of the missing woman takes him back to Reykjavik, and then to a remote farmhouse beneath dark mountains where an elderly woman and her son live with their sinister past.
An exciting new voice in Nordic crime fiction, Glass Key Award-nominated Icelandic author Solveig Pálsdottir is published for the first time in English.

Very dark tale
A strange tale that was more interested in being a very dark tale than a good story. I liked the detective but he was a sad soul. His wife had exiled him to the back of beyond for a year whilst she figured out their marriage. The poor victim - not sure she needed to be disfigured when she was already downtrodden. Ending up in a weird household in the middle of nowhere to be mistreated and ultimately nearly killed. The tormented fox was another strange distraction - a bit too cliched and very far fetched but a good narrator.

Slow Burner
A bit of a slow starter, Sajee a lady from Sri Lanka living in Snorrabraut Iceland where she has been living for a few years now, and has been given a job in a beauty parlour in Hofn more eastern Iceland. Still, when she arrives no one to meet her and she stays with a couple doing odd jobs around their house but then she disappears never to be seen again. Franson, an ex-police officer hears about this and works his best but, I did find this a bit slow and kept losing concentration.
Not read or listened to this author before as I like a lot of Scandi police thrillers, but I don't think I will bother with this author again, at least it was one of the free listens from Audible.

Rawness and isolation of countryside in Iceland
Was disappointed with this storyline. Very slow and almost didn’t finish it . Picks up momentum towards the end though . Doesn’t say what the outcome was for main protagonist.

An ok listen
I thought the story was good, not great, but worth a listen, I had to persevere with it at times as I thought it was a little short of depth

Better than Ragnar Jónasson
This is an intriguing and gripping crime novel, similarly paced to that of a Wallander, with good, realistic characters and a strong story.

Excellent all round
The plot was good, the characters were developed and the final chapters were gripping. I really enjoyed this book, although a random selection. Excellent.

I loved this atmospheric thriller
I almost didn’t continue with this audiobook as it took me a while to get into the narrators tone of voice but then I started to forget her American accent and then her monotone way of reading actually helped me drift away into the story.
As I like henning Mankell’s slow paced building of character and atmosphere, I really loved this novel. Look forward to reading more from her!

Excellent - compelling and realistic
I am really surprised at some of the so-so reviews - especially those who say it was unresolved as I thought it was truly excellent. Some say a slow start - I say beautifully laid ground work. The story was very compelling and also the atmosphere of a small town in Iceland very well laid. The narrator in this case was also very good indeed. Am pleased to have discovered a new Nordic noir writer to follow!

Sadly disappointed for a scandy thriller
The narration of the main female characters voice was unbearable to listen to after a while.
There’s no entertainment for me listening to an already downtrodden vulnerable woman being treated terribly it’s just harrowing.
The slow pace just prolonged the agony so switched it off.
