Summary
The mound, a quiet town gathering spot...until now. Now something undeniably evil is hiding beneath it. A powerful darkness, terror with unfathomable needs and desires, spreading its roots in secret, transforming all that the good townfolk love and cherish: Their past, their hopes, their souls.
Courageous physicist Brian Kelley and his beautiful, very pregnant wife, must confront the horror. They will band together with their neighbors to battle a power transcending their worst imaginings. And only an impossible gamble will give them a chance to survive The Forbidden Zone - master storyteller Whitley Strieber's breakneck journey beyond the cutting edge of terrifying suspense.

A deep and moving horror story
Great narration. Creepy atmosphere. Good plot and pace. The place setting was interesting. Highly recommend this. Good price as well.

And the moral of the story is....
... don't associate with Brian because he's a total idiot!
What I liked most about Forbidden Zone is that it was not a cookie-cutter horror story. The overall story was good, but a few things detracted from it. (1) We've already established that Brian is an idiot who puts his wife, unborn child, and friends in danger with his thoughtlessness; (2) (SPOILER!) The fireflys that "rape" women adds nothing to the story and cheapens it. I almost stopped listening at that point; (3) the narrator is has an unpleasant and often gravely voice and reads too slowly (listen at 1.25 or 1.5x) He made Brian's petite sweet wife sound like demon.
I would recommend this book to read (not listen to). The audible book fell short because of the narrator and I would definitely try another book by Whitley Strieber if read by someone else.

The Forbidden zone
This was a good story. It was very creepily narrated by David Scott. I was given this book free for an honest review.

Odd sci fi
Brian seemed very selfish to me for involving others in his "mess". This was like a living nightmare and the insects were too unbelievable for me to buy into. I definitely will NOT be giving this author another try. It was one nonsensical thing after another without anything plausible to grip onto. The narration was great, but the storyline was something out of the 1950's. I found the narrator to be very expressive with a pleasant voice. It's unfair and a shame to blame or penalize a narrator because a listener can't think to turn up the speed to a pleasing level of listening. The story is whack not the narration.
