Summary

Coroner Jenny Cooper investigates… A tragic accident or a terrible crime? When Flight 189 plunges into the Severn Estuary, Coroner Jenny Cooper finds herself handling the case of a lone sailor whose boat appears to have been sunk by the stricken plane, and drawn into the mysterious fate of a ten year-old girl, Amy Patterson, a passenger on 189, whose largely unmarked body is washed up alongside his.

While a massive and highly secretive operation is launched to recover clues from the wreckage, Jenny begins to ask questions the official investigation doesn’t want answered. How could such a high tech plane – virtually impregnable against human error – fail? What linked the high powered passengers who found themselves on this ill-fated flight? And how did Amy Patterson survive the crash, only to perish hours later? Under pressure from Amy’s grieving mother, and opposed by those at the very highest levels of government, Jenny must race against time to seek the truth behind this terrible disaster, before it can happen again…

Critic reviews

”As premises go, this one’s a killer . . . It’s a terrific series, meticulously researched, sharply plotted and peopled with sympathetic characters, led by Cooper, who is always aware of the human consequences of failure” (Financial Times)

”The Flight is M R Hall's fourth story to feature clever coroner Jenny Cooper. His investigation of a plane crash in the Severn estuary is as complex and impressive as his debut The Coroner” (Sunday Telegraph)

another good listen

I love this character, a tortured, intelligent, strong woman on a mission.
all books have been great so far but this one did drag a little too long.

Great story well read

This really holds the suspense well and has characters you care about. It’s a good credible narrative that is well researched. I now have Matthew Hall on my radar. Enjoy!

Disturbing plot line

Brilliant story, details about flying written with real authority, especially from a nervous flyer. Characters are mostly well rounded and real sounding. Would have preferred Jenny to be more secure now she knows the reason for her panic events. I listen to them and thoroughly enjoy. Thank you.

Mathew Hall to date--'The Flight' Book Four kept me intrigued as did the three previous books.
Jenny Cooper the main character in the book has problems like the rest of society but is able to go about her job as Coroner with outwardly complete professionalism.
Full of intrigued, the story is believable! Loved it.
I am looking forward to book five.
The narrator is brilliant and hope she is doing all Jenny Cooper's story's.
I listen to all audible books whilst doing the jobs I hate i.e. domestics around the house and also in any leisure time I might have.

Not my favourite but still a good listen.

I have just binged on this entire series. The Coroner proved to be little addictive xx

So Clever

The aeronautical details are impressive and certainly (to this non expert) seem amazingly (and horribly) credible - the research that must go into this kind of plotting is so thorough. Only a very few elements I found unlikely but, like the previous stories in this series, the twists and intricacies of the investigation are just so clever.
I find the main character too prickly and flawed to be entirely likeable but I'm devouring this series and she is compulsive - the narrator Sian Thomas delivers her haughty intelligent manner brilliantly. IMHO some of the secondary English characters sound rather too similar to each other with identical "generic local" accents - there are no convincing Bristolian accents or colloquialisms to be heard anywhere for example. The Welsh characters are served better.
