Summary
Who'll survive the midnight show?
The Colonial Theater, a single-screen movie house on the edge of town, is holding a special midnight screening of a brand new splatter flick. But before the opening titles make it to the screen, the popcorn-laden aisles run red with blood as a masked killer begins slaughtering the moviegoers with the aid of a spiked meat tenderizer.
Among those filling the torn seats: a movie blogger in search of fodder to appease his limited readers, a victim of a recent betrayal who’ll do just about anything for an escape from a home she no longer feels welcome in, a fugitive on the lam looking for sanctuary from the city streets, and a pair of post-adolescent twins who’ve managed to creep into the theater unseen.
After a full 90 minutes of bloodshed both on and off the silver screen, only four patrons remain. Four patrons who discover that the doors have been locked and the only way out is inside a body bag.

It'll be fun.
A remake of the highly praised '80's slasher film, Blood Letting, was coming to the sleepy town of Emdale for one night only: a midnight showing at the old Colonial (I thought it had been condemned) Theatre. Not many people wanted to attend, remakes were rarely as good as the original, but for those who did for whatever their reasons would be in for a surprising performance.
Yes, a slasher book about a slasher film, simple yet brilliant in it's execution! The audience is introduced individually before the performance begins, with good characterisation and back stories for each: it is worth reading the book for these alone. Interesting protagonists with great dialogue, especially the 14 years old twin brothers, Ted and Tyler, constantly bickering with each other. The narration is equally superb, Michael Butler not only providing excellent individual voices for every character but also totally throwing himself into the spirit of the stories, with good inflection and emotion without going over the top. Even knowing that they will probably soon be doomed, it is easy to empathize with several protagonists, and a certain suspense is present throughout. The (almost) ending was also, for this reader, unexpected.
I was most fortunate in being freely gifted with a complimentary copy of The Final Girl, at my request, by the rights holder via Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much. Although a mostly predictable basic stlry, it was told with flare and colour, well written and performed, and the six and three-quarters hours went by quickly. Definitely recommended.

Not exactly what I'd expected
I did enjoy this very much but it was not what I'd been expecting at all, it is very much in the vein of an eighties slasher horror, down to the slow introduction of the characters (that's the part I was not expecting), I quite enjoyed getting to know the players, no in depth character development, it's not really required when you're going to kill them off, but enough for us to get to know a little about each of them, although this only took around 2 hours it felt like quite a slice of of the book in terms of build up which may not suit everybody in this age of slash and kill, kill, kill ... but some of us like the slower introductions.
The main event is very gory, but not as high pressure as the description led me to believe, it's not a movie theatre full of hundreds that's being attacked, it's a small audience, and that makes it easy for us to follow each character through their ordeal.
I would definitely recommend this to all who enjoy the good old seventies/eighties horror stories, I do believe you'd enjoy it, and Michael Butler narrated it brilliantly.
I almost forgot to add that the ending was a rather intriguing and an unexpected twist.

Girl
Michael Butler did a wonderful job of narration
This book is not for the faint of heart it is a violent dark listen that will make you think twice about dark movie theatres. If you love blood. violence and gore this is the book for you.
