Summary
In the former United States, sixteen-year-old Noam Álvaro wakes up in a hospital bed, the sole survivor of the viral magic that killed his family and made him a technopath. His ability to control technology attracts the attention of the minister of defense and thrusts him into the magical elite of the nation of Carolinia.
The son of undocumented immigrants, Noam has spent his life fighting for the rights of refugees fleeing magical outbreaks - refugees Carolinia routinely deports with vicious efficiency. Sensing a way to make change, Noam accepts the minister’s offer to teach him the science behind his magic, secretly planning to use it against the government. But then he meets the minister’s son - cruel, dangerous, and achingly beautiful - and the way forward becomes less clear.
Caught between his purpose and his heart, Noam must decide who he can trust and how far he’s willing to go in pursuit of the greater good.

Great book! Phenomenal narrator!
So I wasn't sure about this book initially due to its focus on a virus considering the current situation but this one really surprised me and helped to get me out of a massive reading slump! Such an interesting story! The Webtoon is also really good! Must give credit to the narrator - it's narrated really well! I was eager to listen till the very end

I really enjoyed this book!
This book is delightfully gay without it being the main focus of the book. I really enjoyed the performance and I fall in love with the character of Noam. It also says something that I was already looking for when the next book would be out before the book was even finished. I will be recommending this book to anyone in the near future.

An amazing urban fantasy!
An amazing story with race and gender diversity that tackles a lot of key issues that we're going through today - racial inequalities, exploitation of power and immigration to name a few.
Noam and Dara were amazing characters and well written, and the world was as familiar as it was alien which is what I always like in an urban fantasy.
A strong start to the series.

y'know, communication, fellas
I love Michael Crouch, always, but this book is sorta awful. it poses, what I personally think, is a cool concept, with its so called heroes, villains, political intricacies, lgbtq+ characters and whatnot. but the heroes that I was so desperately trying to cheer for, were your typical bad-at-throwing-constructive mouth--sounds-at-each-other characters, which tends to make intricate politics and interpersonal drama fall bulldozing-ly flat. 10/10 I was so angry it wasn't even a fun-bad read, support michael crouch cuz his accent is crunchy, and maybe support this book if the 2nd one somehow turns out to be holy writing, bc somehow I managed to grow hope for it even tho this one was frustrating and I will probably maybe most likely somehow read the 2nd cuz now I cannot turn back and (SPOILER!! IF YOU CARE ABT THAT...) I have to see if dara survives and gets to punch a certain nazi (ppl pls do not actually punch nazis that's violent) thank🐍 for 👂👂 ✌ my ted-talk merry chryslers 😝🙃🎅🎄⭐
