Summary

In this luminous sci-fi debut, a nonverbal autistic woman refuses to crumble as she stands against a dogmatic society clinging to a centuries-long conflict built on lies.

Citadel is the only human city on the alien planet Edalide, ruled by the biweekly tides that bring both deadly danger and much-needed resources. But the drowning waters, constant threat of starvation, and eternal cold aren’t the most dangerous challenge. For the Flooded Forest is ruled by demons: monsters from Hell sent by their vengeful god as penance for their ancestors’ rebellion. To save their souls and return to their former glory, Citadel must kill every single one.

Or so they believe.

Olivia lost her lover to the demons almost a year ago. But during a scientific expedition, a chance encounter reveals that the demons are sentient—a startling discovery that would get Olivia executed if she exposed it.

Driven by the burning need for answers, Olivia embarks on a dangerous journey into the Forest. There, she must face alien monsters, zealous warriors, and the demons of her own past. But change comes slowly, and always with a price…

Absolutely brilliant

I cannot say how much I enjoyed this book. I was engaged and griped from the very beginning. It dealt with difficult topics and concepts really well and I have gone right back to the start to listen again.

Loved it!

I find sometimes with fantasy we get about detached from the characters in order to build a huge complex world. Not here! The characters will make you feel so much in this book, and non-human characterisation is 10/10. The world building is complex enough to give a good sense of the society, civilization background, and terrain but not super in depth. It's all about the people. Notes: I'd have liked a little more from the ending and maybe a few higher stakes throughout but I'd give it a solid 4.5 if I could.

Not tropy

I loved the genuine details such as the step family not being a bitch, things just not working out but not because someone is malevolent. Characters were very complex. It was super engrossing. A very pleased surprise from a debut novel. It also concludes like a standalone without leaving an unsatisfactory cliff hanger, but I can see it being a series.

the amazing world

Christina has an amazing world building skill the first book I have read since I first read the Percy Jackson series that had me truly immersed. I especially loved how through the links that her friends and family could experience what a meltdown felt like something I wish people could do in real life

the best book I've read this year

An amazing book all round, and beautifully written. I was engaged start to finish. I really hope there will be a sequel as I have so many questions!

Sequal please

I've never felt so seen, engaged, stimmy, devastated, overjoyed by a book. The ND representation down to the day to day life experiences with being nonverbal and ND (not just the use in the active plot) was accurate and amazingly done. Even the writing style and the way it shifted descriptions between senses and emotions and narrative was amazingly done in a very logical way that made sense while still being smooth enough and regular enough to keep dopamine engagement. I need a sequal though I have so many questions. I spent all of chapter 41 sat in the rain as I was so lost in the branches of the flooded Forrest I forgot the real world existed. I love this book so much

fantastic

I adored this book, good pacing though it ended a little abruptly - I just NEED the next one now please.
Really refreshing perspective to have a non-verbal character who isnt a caricature.
