Summary

The second brilliant novel in the highly acclaimed Malabar House series featuring Persis Wadia, India's first female police detective.

A priceless manuscript. A missing scholar. A trail of riddles.

Bombay, 1950

For more than a century, one of the world's great treasures, a 600-year-old copy of Dante's The Divine Comedy, has been safely housed at Bombay's Asiatic Society. But when it vanishes, together with the man charged with its care, British scholar and war hero John Healy, the case lands on Inspector Persis Wadia's desk.

Uncovering a series of complex riddles written in verse, Persis - together with English forensic scientist Archie Blackfinch - is soon on the trail. But then they discover the first body.

As the death toll mounts, it becomes evident that someone else is also pursuing this priceless artefact and will stop at nothing to possess it....

Harking back to an era of darkness, this second thriller in the Malabar House series pits Persis, once again, against her peers, a changing India and an evil of limitless intent.

Gripping, immersive and full of Vaseem Khan's trademark wit, this is historical fiction at its finest.

clever riddle

Really enjoyed this second volume with its twists and turns. Satisfyingly, predictable, and beautifully rated.

Great story

An intriguing story with a credible but hard to guess plot line. Some pronunciation was jarring, and I don’t think it is just the authentic Indian accent.

Oh dear so irritating

I really enjoyed the first book in this series as it was for me refreshingly different. This one however was really rather irritating all the way through. The tortuous pseudo Da Vinci Code type treasure hunt (to my mind one of the most annoying books ever written!) Was farcical. The perpetrator a high profile Nazi known never to have set foot on the sub continent, the historical lessons aimed at children and the heavily anti British theme throughout just made the whole thing difficult to get through. On the plus side the recurring characters from the first book are believable as people and potential exists for them to be developed in subsequent books. The other mildly irritating aspect was the narrators inability to pronounce certain words with consistency. There are a few examples eg adjutant. She does however have a lovely easy to listen to voice.

Superb story

I loved this book. A really brilliant intricate storyline. The narrator was very good too. The only thing that bugged me was the Americanisms in the text. Apart from that this is a top rate book.

Lovely second book of the series!

Vaseem Khan has knocked it out of the park again with another enjoyable read, brought to life splendidly through the vocal talents of May's Saroya!

The author has given us a lovely opportunity to delve deeper into the character's of the first book, whilst still managing to explore a whole new plot and mystery ahead!

I am about to buy the third book and get straight into it! Thoroughly enjoying this series! ❤️

Great combination of mystery, history and geography.

I love murder mysteries but this series gives so much more: a strong female protagonist, lots of interesting history of India ( and in this book Europe too) ,culture and geography, plus lovely quirky characters and humour. Really enjoyable. Thanks

Enthralling

Lovely to disappear off to India , with history of India, Dante, Nazis and war heros, plus detective work a wonderful blend! I just wish the narrator checked her pronunciation on words she’s not familiar with - otherwise a perfect listen!
