About this listen

Semifinalist for the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award and Previous Number One Bestseller in Humorous Literary Fiction

"A rich and soulful novel...steeped in wanderlust and whimsy." (Publishers Weekly)

"The Dirty Parts of the Bible might just be the long-awaited great American novel." (New York Times best-selling author John M. Perkins)

The Dirty Parts of the Bible is a humorous adventure across America during the Great Depression - a rollicking tale of love and liquor, preachers and prostitutes, trains and treasure, sure to appeal to fans of O Brother Where Art Thou?, Water for Elephants, Mark Twain, Willie Nelson, and Johnny Cash.

It's 1936, and Tobias Henry is stuck in the frozen hinterlands of Michigan. Tobias is obsessed with two things: God and girls.

Mostly girls, of course.

But being a Baptist preacher's son, he can't escape God.

When his father is blinded in a bizarre accident (involving hard cider and bird droppings), Tobias must ride the rails to Texas to recover a long-hidden stash of money. Along the way, he's initiated into the hobo brotherhood by Craw, a ribald vagabond-philosopher. Obstacles arise in the form of a saucy prostitute, a flaming boxcar, and a man-eating catfish. But when he meets Sarah, a tough farm girl under a dark curse, he finds out that the greatest challenge of all is love.

Wonderfully rich comic odyssey

Charmingly entertaining book - we’re on an odyssey with Tobias back to his families birthplace in mid 30s America and we’ll meet some colourful characters on the way - some are friends, some are out to stiff us. Funny, sweet, earthy and rich. Torode’s sparkling writing serves up characters who all have an extra dimension that makes them interesting. A story with a proper beginning, middle & ends and very well narrated, too. One of my few 5 star reviews - just a shame it’s not longer.

very funny an heartwarming tale

I liked all the characters in the story but particularly the hobo craw. The performance was great and made the story really come alive for me.

A coming of age tale set in the Great Depression.

The narrator was very good for this short novel telling the journey literally and figuratively of Tobias, as he goes back to his father's family farm across America Michigan, to Texas to find money, hidden years before, to save the family after his father goes blind. He meets Craw, a hobo who takes him under his wing and he discovers the wider world and of course himself
It is witty, at times poignant, evocative of the time, yet a tale for any time.
I enjoyed it a lot but felt there was a lack of depth and development to a lot of the characters. This is not unusual in short books I find. I would be interested in other things by this author.
Overall though 4 stars.
