It’s Livia’s 40th birthday and she’s having the party of a lifetime to make up for the wedding she never had. Everyone she loves will be there except her daughter Marnie, who’s studying abroad. But although Livia loves Marnie, she’s secretly glad she won’t be at the party. She needs to tell Adam something about their daughter but she’s waiting until the party is over so they can have this last happy time together.
Adam wants everything to be perfect for Livia so he’s secretly arranged for Marnie to come home and surprise her on her birthday. During the day, he hears some terrible news. He needs to tell Livia, because how can the party go on? But she’s so happy, so excited – and the guests are about to arrive.

Very good
I’ve both loved and loathed this authors work. This was very good. You could feel the weight of the burdens people were carrying, it was so well written, the characters well drawn. The narrators were excellent.

Not really much of a Dilemma..
Not much of a Dilemma I thought the story was quite weak. It was recommended to me. But I wouldn't say it was that good.

Interesting concept but too drawn out lacking action
Like the others say it is very difficult to like the characters. It’s almost like as if they were sociopaths of some type.
The premise of how one action can start a chain of events is interesting but gets lost in a storyline that if you skipped the middle 10 chapters you could still follow (I fell asleep for 3 chapters and still could follow it when I woke up) I kept waiting for something to happen but it never really did.
However, the narrators do a great job and it wasn’t the worst book I’ve listened to it’s ok, to pass the time whilst you potter around.

Heartbreaking
Read very well and a great story, even though it was a different subject matter.

Great narrator
The book had a good storyline but the last 2hours were long and drawn out, this spoilt it , it’s based on human emotion but so in depth it made me miserable and I literally couldn’t wait for it to finish

Disappointing!
Like other reviewers, based upon her previous novels, I was expecting more from this author. This book must have something because I stuck with it and I tend to return anything I am not enjoying! That said, right up to the end, I expected more to happen. The premise is fine, but alone, it is not enough to hold-up so many hours. Much of the story is flat and a bit tedious. The narration is very good.

Worth a credit.
I don't often listen non-stop, but had this finished in 2 days. Very compelling, and if at times I wondered if Livia was a little shallow, I then wondered if she is just the inner voice of us all in our everyday lives. The interwoven themes of the things we keep from our loved ones, for good or bad, is very reflective of being human. A clever plot that kept me guessing.

An unexpected pleasure
I wasn’t too sure about this book from reading the overview but once I started listening to it I really enjoyed it. I thought the concept for the story was really good and quite different. I liked seeing how the main characters lives progressed and unravelled through different decisions they had made for what they thought were the right reasons. Well worth a listen
