Summary

A taciturn soldier and a social butterfly - is the perfect home worth the price of a marriage of inconvenience?

Blake Montague's draconian temper and clever mind belong on the Continent, decoding French communications. Instead, as the youngest son of a baron, he's terrorizing London ballrooms in search of a wife who will buy the commission he can't afford.

Jocelyn Carrington, after years of smiling through the pain inflicted by an uncaring family, has just inherited a fortune. Now she can buy the special home with an aviary her eccentric younger brother needs - but Blake Montague's family owns it. They offer the house if she will marry their son and prevent him from marching off to war. Except Blake will use her dowry to buy his commission.

How can Jocelyn gain the home of her dreams while keeping alive a courageous man with a bad habit of attracting trouble? Can Blake believe the beautiful Jocelyn might actually free him from his family's manipulations? Can this wary, cynical pair open their hearts to trust in the power of love?

Critic reviews

"Intriguing protagonists, quirky secondary characters, and a surprising plot make for an endearing sequel to...The Wicked Wyckerly." (Publishers Weekly)
"Rice takes her cast of characters - including the naughty French-speaking parrot, Percy - on a passionate, sensual, rib-tickling romance. A master of the nuances of humor, she brings joy, lots of love, and plenty of laughter to this fast-paced, unforgettable second Rebellious Sons story." (Joan Hammond, RT Reviews)
"Every character entertains and satisfies.... It's a sweet, sexy, fun romp with so much heart. I can't wait to read the next book in the series." (Anne Gracie, author of The Accidental Wedding)

Entertaining, happy ending for all

Lovely to see all the “good” main characters find their deserved happy ending- entertaining story, no dull parts and I enjoyed listening to it all.

Original story line

Original and fast moving story line, couldn't stop listening! There are a few mild sex scenes but these are not just to fill the pages as in some books, they are appropriate to the story. Will certainly listen to more from this author.

lovely romantic story

The story is lovely and the way it's written is beautiful.
But I am English and the accent used by the reading actress grated on my ears for at least the 1st 10 chapters. I spent part of my listening trying to identify the speech problem. The American accent then came through.
I'm sure if you investigated amongst your English listeners you could find either a good voice coach or an actress who would be less grating to our ears. There are as many accents amongst the English as there are in America, even though we are smaller.
If you want to hear middle English, try those educated in any of the many private schools accross the country.
But as a long term listener to English peech performances I suggest you listen to the various rural accents, from Cornwell to Somerset, from Sussex to Yorkshire, from Wiltshire to Yorkshire. from Suffolk to Cambria. They will give you the voice tembre needed to be both smooth to the ear and differentiate between characters. And then do the same for the county main towns where the accents are harsher and still evolving and to some easier to listen to.

A great second book in the series

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I wasn’t sure that I would (I ignored the reviews whining about the narrator, because I find no fault with her - my advice: listen to a sample before purchasing). However the tale was really different from it’s predecessor and that threw me - given that it was about the same group of friends.

That’s where the genius lies. Yes, they’re friends, but no, they are not remotely alike and that is where the enjoyment begins. Lady Bell is more interesting and likeable - she has evidently learned something from her first sponsorship. I still don’t have a handle on her nemesis and look forward to their story.

All in all, this is a very palatable series for those who enjoy Regency Romances.

I Loved this Book

The next instalment of this series was equally as good as the first other than this had more laughs.
I can't wait to listen to the next instalment.
I would definitely recommend it.

Pleasant

A comfortable period romance. The codes theme is interesting. I shall research code usage by the military and ministries in the period.

Poor narration

The story isn't particularly gripping but I would have persisted had it not been for the inadequate narration. I gave up after chapter 8.
