I just couldn't

Pros- the narrator is better than average for a period drama audiobook. I would listen to her again. It's also not the worst story I've ever listened to and if you're very interested in lots of steamy scenes, you'll love this.

Cons- lots of plot holes! Why doesn't the main character just say her brother is an invalid who needs a nurse?! who knows - it's not like it's a secret. Certainly would have cut out a good couple of hours of this book!

The premise is ridiculous so no I won't be listening to the others in this series.

SOFT PORN - B-MOVIE STYLE ....

I am terribly sorry to say that THIS BOOK HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HISTORICAL, NOR REGENCY NOVEL ....
The story line which intrigued me - which could have been good is spoilt by Sex, Sex and more Sex - not even well written ...

It reminded me of a BAD B-MOVIE TYPE SEX PLOT -

Anyone who loves real Historical Regency Novels will be very disappointed as the author, Kate Pearce, fails as such - sorry to be so blunt!

The performance of Julie Maisey cannot be criticised, as she only narrated what was in front of her - and she did a great job but it doesn't change the fact that THIS BOOK IS AWFUL.

I am writing this review so blunt for one simple reason, to prevent others to lured by the storyline, like I was.

I certainly will not bother looking up any more books written by Kate Pearce - WASTE OF MONEY & WASTE OF TIME...

Not bad.

Once you have suspended belief that the two main characters would have come to such an agreement in 1814, the story is not bad. The narration is first class.

Liberal sprinklings of sex

Kate Pearce writes well and Juliet Maisey 's performance is good. It's an unlikely story but still quite enjoyable.

An enjoyable read

Elizabeth Waterstone, complying with her stepfather’s command, has to work in the household of the Duc de Diablo Delamer to pay off his gambling debts. Once the Duc discovers she’s not been sent there as a prostitute they find another way in which she can comply with her stepfather’s wishes, one involving spies, codes an assassination plots.
I found the story a little flimsy at first but it got better.
The narrator’s use of accents was good and the whole narration was well done.

Absolutely Brilliant

I loved this book. Everything from the plot & the different characters.
I figured it was a good book when I found myself shouting my frustrations into mid air. if a book can get me that animated, then it must be good.
I'm now off to listen to the next book to see where the story goes next.
I would definitely recommend it.

Hmmmm

There were times I thought the book was great but there were more times I felt so much angst! It could be confusing at times and some of the love scenes I wondered if the book had completely skipped a minute or two. Some of the sex scenes were steamy which was nice. For how long the book was there should’ve been enough time to build a love and see how they could fall in love with each other but no. I wanted to slap her more than a few times for how stupid she acted. I thought there could have been great potential for this book and I loved the duke but couldn’t see how a man like him could fall for someone like her since there was no build up of love. The narration was okay, sometimes he sounded like Arnold Schwarzenegger and sometimes like Gru from Despicable Me. I don’t think I will be listening to the next book.

DNF

Wasted 2.5 hours waiting for the story to begin and to progress. Make me a courtesan, you won’t like it but I’ll do it, make me a courtesan, you won’t like it but I’ll do it, blah blah blah. Boring.

Loved It

This story started me on the path to Kate Pearce’s entire library. Loved everything about it. The negative reviews and comments have me scratching my head, but it’s impossible to please everyone all the time. Especially, if a book is rated by a specific character’s perceived behavior in a storyline. Was I entertained? Absolutely. I liked it for what it was.. a fictional story. I do not expect characters to be perfect and/or without fault. This does not mean I condone every action of each character. Otherwise, many of us would never get past our required high school reading.

Rape isn’t romantic

Basically starts off with a guy almost raping a woman until he finds out she’s not that kind of girl. This sets up the hold whore / virgin dynamic and it’s just weird and creepy how the anyone would think this guys behavior is OK. It’s not OK, he doesn’t really improve and he continues to be weird and creepy. If you are someone into rape fantasies, Bhutan know it’s a fantasy and no way OK or not rape.

Boring

Don’t understand how this book got any good reviews. I got through 3/4ths of it and I still can’t make myself care about the leads or feel any real connection between them. Skip!

Perfect Narration

Steamy hot sex scenes bordering on dominance/submissive. Ms. Maisey is a talented reader. She throws in enough of an accent in her reading for it to be interesting without dominating the story. I’ll be looking for her work in the future. Kate Pearce’s story is interesting and her is heroine dynamic.

More than your average Regency romance

I admit that I overlooked this title for a long time, mostly due to, well... the title. "Educating Elizabeth" just sounds so bland and salacious. I thought, oh boy, another 19th century Tonne debutante getting herself mixed up with the powerful Alpha rake, in which the only plot is Will they? Or won't they?... fall in love after long pages of detailed romps in the sack.

Refreshingly, the story was full of spy intrigue and betrayal, admidst typical emotional and family dramas. It was actually quite good. More than once I felt that tightness in my chest over a particularly heartwrenching or heart-stopping moment. And neithrr Elizabeth or her duke were TSTL or just plain maddening -- mostly.

Admittedly there were also a few face-palms, where I wondered why romance authors continue to rely so heavily on the abominable 'if only they trusted each other enough to be honest the ENTIRE plot would be wrapped up in a page" trope. Oh well, its so common I hate to pick on Kate Pierce for relying on the sins-of-omission trope so heavily, when she really did write an engaging story, despite some faults.

The narrator also did fantastic. She did not have a grating voice, which has been a big barrier for me finding decent escape romances from Audible Plus lately. She managed to differentiate character dialogue well with varying accents and without making the opposite sex sound like dolts or chain-smokers. I know I am grading harshly against other books I've tried listening to lately, but it has been frustrating trying to find that perfect balance of plot, character, and narrator lately to wile away a few tedious working hours.

This story is far from perfect and will likely not suit everyone's taste, but if you are looking for an historic romance with a bit more plot and higher stakes, and you don't mind a bit of X-rated adult content, than look no further.

Not a single redeeming character

I decided to try this book despite the contrived premise as it was offered for free through my Audible membership and the female lead at least initially seemed different from the genre standard. I gave it two hours in before I started skipping to the next chapter every time one of the main characters annoyed me.

The female lead was supposed to be of above average intelligence but made just about ever stupid choice presented her.

The tragic male lead with his ‘woe is me!’ background generally just came across as a smug, condescending bore.

All the conflict was contrived rather than natural. Despite my game of skipping over more than half of most chapters, there was no problem following the plot as each point was painstakingly foreshadowed.

I enjoyed the narrator’s performance, so would recommend this book for background noise you don’t have to pay much attention to.

Stupid story

This is one of those stories where people keep secrets for absolutely no reason. Lazy story telling at its worst. It’s not a mystery- it’s just amateur hour. They are supposed to be incredibly clever people yet they all do stupid, unreasonable things that seems to do nothing for the story except make it longer and more unrealistic.

What even was this story?

This story was extremely disappointing. It was very boring, the storyline was stale and literally took 9 hours to become interesting. I forced myself to finish the book because I saw that it has good reviews but I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone. The chemistry between the leads was back and forth and had no real foundation, the love scenes were bland and weird, and the story felt like it was 3 hours too long.
