OUT NOW: WHAT LIES BURIED. THE SENSATIONAL NEW BOOK BY KERRY DAYNES

Welcome to the world of the forensic psychologist, where the people you meet are wildly unpredictable and often frightening.

The job: to delve into the psyche of convicted men and women to try to understand what lies behind their often brutal actions.

Follow in the footsteps of Kerry Daynes, one of the most sought-after forensic psychologists in the business and consultant on major police investigations.

Kerry's job has taken her to the cells of maximum-security prisons, police interview rooms, the wards of secure hospitals and the witness box of the court room.

Her work has helped solve a cold case, convict the guilty and prevent a vicious attack.

Spending every moment of your life staring into the darker side of life comes with a price. Kerry's frank memoir gives an unforgettable insight into the personal and professional dangers in store for a female psychologist working with some of the most disturbing men and women.

If you enjoyed Unnatural Causes, When the Dogs Don't Bark and My Life With Murderers, you'll love Kerry's gripping account of her experience as a forensic psychologist.

Critic reviews

"Enthralling and terrifying in equal amounts. A chilling glimpse into a world unseen by so many and perhaps for very good reasons. Kerry guides us gently, but firmly, through her incredible world of miscreants, monsters and the misunderstood." (Professor Dame Sue Black, Britain's leading forensic anthropologist and author of the Sunday Times best seller All That Remains

"Kerry Daynes delves into the minds of psychopaths in a fascinating memoir." (Katya Edwards, Daily Mail)

"Daynes offers fascinating insights into what makes criminals tick and how they might be more effectively treated. Her book is funny, wise and thoroughly gripping." (Jake Kerridge, writer and critic)

Would Not Recommend

This is a vague recollection of people with whom the author has worked. It does not go into any detail about psychological topics or the individual cases, and instead focuses more on various things that have happened to the author and how she feels about them. I am disappointed to have used a credit for this.

Yay, totally human, flaws and all

Love this, sadly it her only book so far, I hope her publisher rea!ises what an absolute gem this is and gets more books!! This seems honest, open and humorous, yes it's a serious subject but like all who work in the emergency services you have to laugh, and the author is honest about this. I absolutely love this book and if you have even a passing interest in the legal systen, criminology or psychology then I highly recommend this to you.

Good narrator, awful author.

I was looking forward to reading Kerry Daynes' book but unfortunately it's not only a mundane read wherein the author is full of her own self-importance and everyone is wrong bar her for the most part (yawn) but she's also decided to politicize it throughout; be it ill-fittingly placed snipes at Trump, pointless references to the far-right, institutional racism and all held together by a constant undercurrent of misandry.

If you want an interesting read pertaining to this type genre then I suggest looking to the likes of ex-FBI profiler, John Douglas among others.

A very poignant message.

This book is not only insightful and fascinating but also educational. Kerry Daynes provides a measured account of her professional and personal experiences that have led her to a refreshing stance on psychology. Her professional approach to her clients throughout her career is far from the ordinary and is a refreshing contrast. Her humanistic approach could transform the mental health system in its entirety. This well narrated and compelling book provides a lesson to us all that there is a far better way to help those who suffer. Through understanding and accepting everyone as individuals with unique past experiences, a better outcome is achievable and could revolutionise the mental health care system. This is a compelling and essential listen.

Couldn't finish it

I'm an avid reader of true crime books and possess a particular interest in criminal psychology however I found very little of substance within this audiobook. Rather than providing an insight into the criminal mind as expected I found it to be a jumbled mess of conceited, patronising and often highly misandrous ramblings. It's the 1st audiobook I've not been able to finish.

An Excellent Book

I loved the angle this book takes & Sara Poyzer is an excellent narrator - she sounds very much like Kerry Daynes. I think the few people who have given it low ratings have missed the point, it's recollections & perceptions of Kerry herself not a text book. She highlights the shortcomings of the system which I'm sure nobody can deny & puts forward her feelings & suggestions for improvement. The patient/client studies are fascinating and I would disagree that she is 'on the side of the criminals' as another reviewer suggested, she is just telling the truth. I didn't want it to end.

Her own compassion show

I bought this book by the cover, knowing nothing of her. I was expecting insights in the human mind and society. Instead of that, I found a continuous show of how much she cares, how much she understands, how useless psycology is, how bad the system is and how she will save us (although she wasn't able to save herself from the creepy guy who stalked her).

She ends the book saying that she's become an activist to make the system better. Good luck with that.

Excellent Insight

I went through a raft of emotions listening to this book, but the overall impression was hope and knowing that there are ‘ghost guys’ working in the CJS.
Included a personal touch which could have been a distraction, but it wasn’t in fact it added to the character and quality of the book.

More of a biography

Not what I expected. I thought it would be more case studies but it’s quite self self self. Not a bad book but I didn’t enjoy it.

Informative and interesting

Having worked within the mental health & forensic services for over 20 years it was interesting hearing from Kerry’s perspective.
There was so much I understood and can honestly say agree with. The system is/has failed so many and there really needs to be a shift in how we work and see those with mental health issues.
I now foster and have the empathy & understanding of why such terrible things happen in adulthood.
Maybe if we put more into dealing with childhood trauma we wouldn’t need as many adult services and support for those often unresolved issues.
