About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
Previously published as Alias Emma.
MOVE FAST. STAY DARK.
These are the instructions sent to new operative Emma Makepeace.
She's been assigned to track down a man wanted by the Russians and bring him into MI5.
It should be easy. But the Russians have eyes everywhere.
Emma knows that if spotted she and her target will be killed.
What follows is a perilous chase through London's night-time streets.
But in a city full of cameras, where can you hide?

Top notch spy/ action thriller - not to be missed!
Mayhem on the streets of London, breathless chase sequences with little respite between. Intriguing main characters.
What more do you need.
I confess that my initial impression of the narrator was a little underwhelming and light-weight but after a few minutes I tuned in to the faultless punctuation - no false pauses or absences thereof - excellent portrayal of emotions and appropriate intonation. In the end I went to look for more of Sophie Colquhoun's narrative performances - only to find there are only two plus the next Ava Glass outing for Emma Makepeace - in Audible. I will keep checking for more.
Needless to say I have already pre-ordered. "The Traitor".
Ava Glass is now on my must-read and listen list ( along with Morgan Greene (DI Jamie Johansson), Andy Maslen (Stella Cole), Mason Cross, Michael Connelly and some recent David Baldacci to name a few).

Enjoyable and exciting
It took me a few hours of listening until I was hooked, I finished the book in 3 days and then downloaded the next book 😊
The narrator took a little getting used to.

A bit disappointed
I heard Ava Glass on the Snowcast podcast so I thought I'd give this a go. I was most disappointed with the quality of writing which I found rather adolescent and although I'm no author I kept rewriting sentences in my mind. If it's for young adults then it's probably OK. But there are so many clichés and repetitions. Angled bodies and body parts abound. The characterisation is rather basic. Perhaps as a TV mini series this would work as the excitement of the chase could be very well reflected. I'm sorry I didn't enjoy this as I wanted to.
I thought the narration was quite good actually considering the writing and kept me listening.

Tedious and repetitive
Wanted to like this having read an interview with the author, but the premise of running through London ahead of KGB assassins makes for a tedious plot. Repetitive language and phrasing, too. The narrator’s voice was also not compelling. Needed someone more seasoned to save the reader from the writing.

High octane tedium
Lots of running around, shooting, dodging cameras, boat chases, everything you'd expect in a slightly dreary spy based drama on the telly. I'd advise the author that books rely more on plot and less on action than films. Which is precisely why I don't bother watching them.
