About this listen

Spontaneous combustion and exhumation, drug mules and devil worshippers, a gruesome killing beneath the Palmerston North Airport control tower, a mysterious death in a historic homestead, a firsthand dissection of the infamous Mark Lundy case...

In The Cause of Death, provincial pathologist Dr. Cynric Temple-Camp lifts the lid on the most unusual stories of death and murder he's encountered during his 30-year career.

Very engaging

This was such an interesting listen to hear about pathology experiences from a different part of the world (I am UK)

Narration was very good also, perfectly paced.

Fascinating and Informative

What a fascinating insight into the life and work of a pathologist. Strangely, the unflinching straightforwardness helped me to overcome my natural squeamishness too.

A definite must!

This was one of the best books I have ever listened to (or read). I felt it was easy for someone with a non-science background to follow but was still enthralling for someone like myself who has a science background. I listened to it in one go it was that good and will listen again.

Very detailed and well written

This reminded me a lot of Dr. Richard Shephard's "Unnatural Causes" not only by its content but also the writing style that Temple-Camp employs. The descriptions of death and the stories of the people involved are treated very respectfully while still affording riveting insights into the forensic pathologists day-to-day activities. I gave this book 5 stars all round and the narration was great except for the Irish accent of Pat the pathologist's assistant. "Der's moire to Oirland dan dis" - it's weird because the narrator has the British, New Zealand and Kiwi accents down to a T but the Irish accent sounds bizarrely affected.

Very enjoyable

Really enjoyable and engaging story, the chosen cases gave great insight into his job and its impact and importance of true science. My only very slight bug bear was the Hollywood type terrible Irish accent given to one of his assistants.

Not what I was expecting

After such glowing reviews I was really excited to listen to this. But it wasn’t for me, a boring account of one mans job.
