Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of The CEO Next Door by Elena Botelho and Kim Powell with Tahl Raz, read by Bernadette Dunne.

Everything you thought you knew about becoming a CEO is wrong. You must graduate from an elite college or business school. In fact, only 7 percent of the CEOs of today's companies went to top schools - and 8 percent didn't graduate from college at all. Never put a foot wrong. In fact, people who have become CEOs have on average had five to seven career setbacks on their way to the top.

Drawing on the biggest data set of CEOs in the world - in-depth analysis of 2,600 leaders, drawn from a database of 17,000 CEOs, as well as 13,000 hours of interviews - The CEO Next Door is crammed full of myth-busting and counterintuitive insights into what it really takes to get ahead. Discover the way actual CEOs of top companies think and behave and the kind of traits to develop if you want to make your ambitions a reality and take your career right to the top.

A practical guide for those getting close to becoming a CEO

I really enjoyed a practical side of this book which is filled with tips, examples and solutions to typical issues of first time CEOs. It also works backwards to how to reach this position with the equally rigorous frameworks.

3 stars due to the delivery of the stories

I enjoyed the analysis conducted on the CEOs experience. However, could do better on the delivery of the stories. Personally, I like books that could guide the audience into the 'lessons' while providing sufficient stories/insights with appropriate pauses in between. This book does that at first where you can link up between the two, but mid-way you just get lost and don't find the great insights. The book is interesting at first but do prepare yourself for some boring-lengthy story mid-way. 3 stars overall.

Useful and not too long

Hearing where the majority of ceos come from and their habits was useful. It's OK to play atv2x speed do you can get through it. Nice and succinct.

Selling Services

Could only listen so many times to their Leader recruitment plug, written to sell a service I suspect

sales pitch without credibility

Goodness me a disappointment, insecure repetition of sales pitch... no substance behind the facts apart from tenuous consultancy stats (which incidentally they're selling and constantly referring to). Clearly have little knowledge of the data techniques they're utilising by their use of terms (and indeed their use of SAS who have become 'also rans' that are dated and forgotten in the data industry compared with the proper data firms (eg Amazon, Google, Microsoft etc)

truly a waste of money....
