About this listen

Old-school reporter William Carver returns in this deeply topical and dramatic international thriller.

'Smart and topical' Financial Times (An FT Best New Thriller 2023)

'A compelling, fast-paced thriller' Sun

Australian inventor and geoengineer Clive Winner is the genius who brought the Great Barrier Reef back from the brink, yet his ambition goes well beyond that. He wants to save the planet.

For the all-powerful fossil-fuel industry, Winner is their 'get out of jail free card'. If he can engineer a solution to climate change, business can continue as usual.

When old-school journalist William Carver is tipped off by a trusted Whitehall source that climate scientists have begun to go missing in suspicious circumstances, his gut instinct tells him to follow the story. It rapidly becomes clear that scientists, green campaigners and well-intentioned politicians are in the firing line; William Carver and his colleagues must move fast to find out who is behind the disappearances. They know the journalist's job is to speak truth to power - but first you must uncover that truth and this time it's buried deeper than ever.

Racing between Sydney, New York, Seville and London, The Burning Time is an intelligent, timely and fast-paced thriller for the twenty-first century.

Another brilliant William Carver novel

These novels tackle topical issues in a serious but entertaining way. This latest one is thought provoking and leaves tantalising unanswered questions. The narration by Jonathan Keeble is superb. I can't wait for the next novel!

Another great story from this author.

Peter Hanington’s books are great! An excellently crafted story, with a non- formulaic main character. An absorbing listen, brilliantly read by Jonathan Keeble.

Love this series

Gripping, relevant, heart warming. Love the development of character relationships alongside the mystery of the plot.

Love this series

To be honest I only bought the first book in this series as Jonathan Keeble was the narrator ( who in my opinion is one of the best narrators I have ever heard ) but wow what a series. I love how fast paced it is. So many books go though that boring stage but theese books just don’t Love the characters and the way the stories develop.

Can’t wait for the next one!!

Worryingly credible storyline

Took a bit to get into it but then totally absorbing. I love Jonathan Keeble‘s narrations - even if the women sound like Julian Clary and the Scottish lady in this like Billy Connolly 😊

Brilliant set of books waiting for the next one.

The best climate change novel yet

Hanington is one of the best thoughtful writers around. His first books were excellent — this is brilliant. Hope to meet Carver and team again!

Another superb and topical plot

I have read all 4 William Carver books in succession. They are truly addictive and classic one man maverick stories. I normally read detective or spy novels of a similar ilk, but the journalist is a welcome and totally believable alternative.
I hope to read the 5th book as soon as Peter Hannington finds another suitable situation to explore.

Also an extremely professional performance by the narrator Jonathan
Keeble
