Summary

Imagine if you could grow dragons...in your very own garden!

When Tomas discovers a strange old tree at the bottom of his grandad's garden, he doesn't think much of it. But he takes the funny fruit from the tree back into the house - and gets the shock and delight of his life when a tiny dragon hatches! The tree is a dragonfruit tree, and Tomas has got his very own dragon, Flicker....

Tomas soon finds out that life with Flicker is great fun, but also very...unpredictable. Yes, dragons are wonderful, but they also set fire to your toothbruth and leave your pants hanging from the TV aerial. Tomas has to learn how to look after Flicker - and quickly. And then something extraordinary happens - more dragonfruits appear on the tree. Tomas is officially growing dragons....

The first book in a sparky and utterly enchanting new series.

Critic reviews

"My favourite sort of book - warm, funny, full of heart." (Polly Faber, author of Mango & Bambang)

"Andy Shepherd's debut is the literary equivalent of a hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows: a warm, sweet treat that, the moment I finished it, made me crave the next one. An enchanting triumph." (Maz Evans, author of Who Let the Gods Out?)

Outstanding

My 5 and 7 year olds were captivated by all 5 books and I feel it is a book we will come back to many times. We listen to this one in just a few days and quickly devoured the others too. As with all of the books in the series I like the way lessons about friendship and and emotions are subtle woven in alongside the excitement of having dragons to look after

this book is suitable for children 5-8 years old

an entertaining story for smaller children, age 5-8, but not as thrilling for older, as might have been intended

Captures the imagination

My kids absolutely loved this story, imaginative, captivating narrative, the story really draws you into the secret and we were all dying to find out what happens next and can’t wait to read the next two! A really lovely piece of fiction for children with no adult themes unnecessarily embedded.
