Brittany, 1821. After Grand-mere Ursule gives her life to save her family, their magic seems to die with her. The lineage continues, though new generations struggle not only to master their power, but also to keep it hidden. The London Silver Vaults - for well over a century, the largest collection of silver for sale in the world. It has more locks than the Bank of England and more cameras than a celebrity punch-up. Not somewhere you can murder someone and vanish without a trace - only that's what happened. The disappearing act, the reports of a blinding flash of light and memory loss amongst the witnesses all make this a case for Detective Constable Peter Grant and the Special Assessment Unit.

Some landscapes hold more magic than others. Artist Laura Matthews finds her new home in the Welsh mountains to be a place so charged with tales and legends, so teeming with the force of the supernatural, that she is able to reach through the gossamer-fine veil that separates her own world from that of myth and fable. She and her husband, Dan, have given up their city life and moved to Blaencwm, an ancient longhouse high in the hills.

Story
Thirty-nine was a fantastic year. I was married to the man I loved. I had a body that worked without creaking. My grandma, who raised me, was still healthy, and life was pretty damned good. But as they say, all good things come to an end. One year later, I’m a widow. My joints are starting to ache. Gram is in the nursing home, and dead people think my home is some kind of supernatural bed-and-breakfast. Gluing body parts onto semi-transparent people has become a side job - deceased people I’m not even sure are actually there.

Summary
The stunning, unforgettable conclusion to the beloved Practical Magic series.
For centuries, the Owens family has been cursed in matters of love. When beloved Aunt Jet Owens hears the sound of the deathwatch beetle, she knows that it is a signal. She has finally discovered the secret to breaking the curse, but time is running out. She has only seven days to live.
Unaware of the family’s witchcraft lineage and all it entails, one of the young sisters of the new Owens generation has fallen in love. As the curse strikes once again, her love’s fate hangs in the balance, spurring three generations of Owens to venture back to where it all began and use their gifts to break the spell that has marked all their lives.
But doing so threatens to destroy everything the family has fought so hard to protect. How much will they give up for the greatest gift of all?
Critic reviews
"Full of Hoffman’s bewitching and lucid prose and vivid characters, The Book of Magic is ultimately about the very human magic of family and love and actions that echo through generations...it casts a spell." (Matt Haig)
"This page-turning Atlantic-crossing caper is, above all, a paean to family love.... These fast fairytales for grown-ups are full of enchanting comfort–more escapist than curse." (Sunday Times)
"A satisfying tale springs from a slow beginning, packing in escapist fable, real-world savvy and incidents galore." (Mail on Sunday)
"Delightfully witchy... Alluring on its own, it's also a satisfying end to a timeless saga." (New York Times Book Review)

A magical ending...
Loved it, a perfect ending to the series. so beautifully written, every sentence is delicious.
This series of books have meant so much to me so reading the very last was bittersweet but this book was just as magical as the others.
Alice Hoffman's writing just draws you in and keeps you hooked. The characters I have come to love, reach their satisfying conclusions and the story is whole. Hoffman's observations on family, sisterhood, life and love stay with me.
I have no doubt I will read them all again. meanwhile I shall take the Owens's advice and live a lot!

Beautiful - 5 stars!
It’s very rare I’ve ever rated anything 5 stars before, it’s also very rare that a book makes me cry. This managed both.
I wasn’t a fan of the original Practical Magic (I loved the film though) but I loved the two prequel books. Read those before you read this.
This book wrapped up the stories of the characters we loved, and I can’t think of a more perfect way to do it. Everyone got the ending they deserved, although some made me cry. This will be a favourite that I re-read many times, I’m sure
