Summary

When Rosie's best friend has an affair with her husband, the consequences reverberate through the lives of two families.

Relationships are torn apart, friendships shattered and childish innocence destroyed. Her daughter Daisy's fragile hold on reality begins to unravel when a letter arrives that opens old wounds.

Rosie's son, Max, blames himself for everything that happened. And her ex-husband, Nick, has his own version of events. As long-repressed memories bubble to the surface, the past has never seemed more present and the truth more uncertain.

Critic reviews

"A vivid and insightful portrayal of a family in crisis; Neill's writing is incisive and smart. A writer at the top of her game." (Gillian McCallister, author of Everything but the Truth)

Ended halfway through the story!!

I agree with others on the narrator of Rosie's character, I almost made me give up the book early on. She sounded miles away and did not do justice to the character. There were many very boring sections for me, particularly the parts involving Gregorio the alternative healer, he was totally unbelievable and ridiculous.
The use of too many convenient coincidences to build the story were also unrealistic.
I persisted with the book as I enjoyed the narrators of Max and Daisy's characters. However I was utterly disappointed with the conclusion of this book. I felt let down by the sudden ending. It's almost as if the writer had grown bored with the characters and decided to call it a day!!

Decent story. Dodgy narration

I liked the story. A bit drawn out but nice twists at the end. The voices of Daisy and Max were great but those of Nick and Rosie were awful. Nicks voice was loud and aggressive and Rosies was way too sinister.

Most enjoyable

An easy listen and nicely written. An insight into different perspectives of the one family and their problems.

Original and gripping

The story is told by several different narrators, which adds interesting perspectives. It explores relationships with an interesting aspect on OCD and some twists. I'm keen to try another one by this author

the sadness, the effects, the karma....

loved the whole portrayal of just how normal people can betray each other in both simple and complex ways; how those betrayals can undermine others and their ability to cope; how those who betray can repeat their actions over and over; how karma or fate can jump in at any time; how even that can cause new betrayals..... and above all how it shows the sadness of it all - for what? the ending was a twist and a final betrayal but of who? the performance was perfectly done.

Only my opinion

The story matched the title! Not a lot more to say really, there was no surprise the characters were not particularly likeable.
Wouldn’t seek this author out again.
But …. This is just my opinion.
