Summary

This warmhearted and moving prequel to the “heart-tugging and emotional” (RT Book Reviews) #1 New York Times bestselling Baxter Family Series follows the family members as they face rising tensions during a wedding and a colossal storm.

A terrible storm builds in the early morning sky over Bloomington, Indiana, as Elizabeth Baxter prepares to celebrate her daughter Kari’s wedding to Tim Jacobs. It’s supposed to be the happiest of days, but Elizabeth can’t shake a growing sense of dread. Is the storm a sign? Something bad is about to happen. Elizabeth knows it.

Indeed, there are dark currents of conflict and doubt coursing through the Baxter family. In the midst of them, Kari Baxter is starting to panic. Is marrying Tim a mistake? And what about her family? Her brother Luke is angry and resentful of their sister Ashley, who has recently returned from Paris, a single mom with a son she too often leaves with their parents. At the same time, Ashley and their sister Brooke have lost the faith that is the family’s glue. Against all this, Kari sees Ashley rejecting her longtime love, Landon Blake, who clearly cares for her, no matter what happened in Paris.

When the storm reaches a terrifying crescendo, a shocking moment of danger brings important truths to light. At the end of the long day, can the Baxters remain a family, tested but stronger?

From an author who “writes with seemingly effortless poetic elegance” (Booklist), The Baxters is an unforgettable testament to the power of love, family, and faith.

Silly, simple

These characters just frustrate me! Their problems could easily be solved with simple conversations!! A question or two and all is right in the relationship again. I haven’t finished book, half way though, but I’m not sure that I can finish. The male reader is kind of hard for me to listen to. I need a deeper read.

Good story but not a great prequel

I really loved the earlier sets of the Baxter family books and have read and listened to them multiple times. I was very excited about a prequel and wanted to love this book but I just could not. There are too many situations and actions that are not consistent with the original story at all. I found myself thinking, “that is not what happened!” several times.

If you are not familiar with the original books I think this would be a solid family drama story. It does have some very touching parts and the Baxter family is full of good characters. I also liked the narrators and thought they did a good job. I just wish it was more aligned with original story.

Prequels are tricky

Although I have been a huge fan of Karen Kingsbury for years, this book fell a little flat for me. I think it’s difficult to write a truly accurate prequel after so many years, and many of the details in this book are contradictory to details provided in later books. I feel like this book was trying too hard to rewrite history that wasn’t there, and honestly it lacked The depth that I have grown accustomed to finding in her writing.

Perfect Self-Care Book

This book was so captivating. I listened to it in one day! I enjoyed getting to know this family and am eager to read the other books about this family. Reading is part of my self-care. With 4 little boys running around, endless piles of laundry, and 100’s of “mommy watch me do this”, this story was just what I needed!

Great story but some inconsistencies

I love Karen Kingsbury and the Baxters’ story. However this story contradicts some parts of the other books in so many ways that it drives me a little crazy.

The Baxters - My first dose of Karen Kingsbury

My mom has been trying to get me to read this series for a while now. The Baxters is the only one she has read (although she has a copy of). We both share a love for reading, and she knew I’d be pulled in once I got started.

This is the first audiobook I’ve ever listened to. Between working full time, going to graduate school, and serving at my local church, it didn’t leave much time to read. I decided to start listening to it while I go on my daily walks or when I done any sort of exercise.

I got to where I would walk longer just to hear more of the story. I related SO much to Kari and Ashley. And the story felt so real like a family I knew in the real world because each person’s struggles were relatable especially if you are on your Christian walk. I remember being like Ashley and dealing with heavy medical things at a young age. And I’m still not too far from their ages at 29. Landon speaking about Baylor reminded me so much of my own time in college and the struggles of remaining a Christian in an environment that shoves the world in your face.

This book was so good!

Do I have any cons? Some things were a bit repetitive, I felt the characters rehashed alot of things in their mind over and over, but at the same time, don’t we all do this?

I haven’t read the rest of the Baxter Series, but I’m immediately going to dive into the next book on my workout tomorrow.

Thank you Karen Kingsbury!

This book was a great addition to the Baxter Family story. It took me back to that small Indiana town of Bloomington and opened up my memories to what could have been. I have always wondered how a tight family could go so astray and this book helped me see what started it all.
