About this listen

This brilliant debut is dark yet hilarious, suspenseful but full of joy.

When three-year-old Harry goes missing, the whole of America turns its attention to one small town. Everyone is eager to help. Everyone is a suspect. Desperate mother Jess' grief is driving her to extreme measures. Newcomer Jared, with an easy charm and a string of broken hearts in his wake is also a suspect. Photographer Jerry is a suspect who is determined to break away from his controlling mother once and for all. And investigating them all is a police chief with a hidden obsession of his own....

In Chris Whitaker's brilliant and original debut novel, missing persons, secret identities and dangerous lies abound in a town as idiosyncratic as its inhabitants.

Gripping

Really enjoyed it and great narrator that held the suspense and intertwined the narratives really well

Great story, very irritating narration.

This is a great story, beautifully written. Poignant, funny and engrossing. Narration is awful, however, and almost stopped me continuing. Delivery is truly irritating and all the female characters are made to sound like stupid cartoon characters or Stewie from Family Guy. Thank goodness the author’s later books which are fabulous also have fabulous narration.

Good listen

I don't really like it when it is so hard to predict the twist but I guess a good book makes you look back at that point and think "well MAYBE I should have seen that coming...". Anyway this book is a slow burner, the characters grow in to themselves and I found myself laughing more and more as it reached its conclusion. Very good indeed.

Belting first novel

This is an exceptional debut from a world class author. Kept me guessing until the very end. Permeated with gentle humour, this is a very gripping tale with some nicely.drawn characters. Can't wait to see what he comes up with next. Needless to say Jeff Harding's narration is wonderful as ever.

Great story terrible narrator

the story is great, fantastic characters (especially loved Mannie) nice couple of surprises BUT good god the narrator is bad.

hardly any variation between characters and the worst. each sentence. is clipped. staccato. with an upwards inflection. I don't know if it's a regional accent in the USA, but it got an my nerves so much I nearly stopped listening bit for the aforementioned great story

Great book, robotic narration

Great book but the mechanical narration style is so annoying as are the different character voices. I ended up buying on kindle too so I could read the rest of it.

Very First Audiobook

This was my very first audiobook and defo doesnt dissapoint. Although there are lots of characters, they’re all distinct enough to be able to differentiate and remember them. Couldnt stop listening.

Wow, taken completely by surprise!

What a fabulous book, beautifully written with great humour and sadness as it follows a number of characters and how their lives unfold. Two huge twists I did not see coming.

Exciting and so compassionate

Great story with twists and turns right to the end. I love Whitaker’s compassion and love of humanity . Great characters and a perfectly suited narrator. I’m a fan !
