Summary

Jace, a backcountry ranger assigned to patrol the wilderness of North America, was hiking when abruptly he was somewhere…else. Wind battered his thinly clothed body, and the salt air from crashing waves immediately soaked him to the bone. Nothing looked familiar. And then the strange game messages started appearing in his vision.

With no explanation for how he arrived here, Jace must nonetheless learn to survive in a merciless environment, crafting everything with his own hands. He must learn the art of combat and how to control the powerful abilities that surface in his body. Northblood, they’ll call him. A blessing and a curse.

On the bright side, he’s totally buff. And there’s this hot redheaded game tester who was pulled from her old life and shoved into his.

Things could definitely be worse.

Double edge comment

I believe this book had such great promise. The writer made a solid effort to give the listener a well-rounded sense of who each character is. Sadly this book fails in one central area. With the writer’s permission I presume, the narrator gave a character the voice-over of a Bill and Ted character, and it has become so obnoxious to listen to that someone might consider returning this book. For instance, imagine if you had to hear someone say, “Your such a bodacious babe,” in a supposed medieval-like setting, it just does not fit.

Incompetent male main character

The main male character is about as competent with survival techniques as a hamster would be with quantum physics, im fairly certain basic survival training is a requirement to even get a job as a ranger. This guy is so bad if he went more than a 1000 yards from his house he would be the one search and rescue would be looking for.

Camping

Story is about mom and dad going on a boring camping trip with the entitled annoying teenagers. A Story were apparently a ranger that spends over 200 days in the woods each year and cannot make a campfire, I know 1st year boy scouts or cub scouts can do that. Very shallow characters and lack of development, don't care for any of them.

It's ok

Great character voices!

It's just another LitRPG novel. People end up in another world where stats and levels affect everything. They have to fight monsters and complete quests.

The notes added to quests in the game system are entertaining and make it clear some mysterious entity is watching and paying personal attention.

The skulks' words being translated into statements like "righteous, dude!" was amusing.

I feel like playing Valheim around the time of listening to this book would make both more enjoyable. They both have that feeling of starting from nothing and having to build up very basic technology.

I don't MIND the series. If the books appeared for free in my Audible account, I'd listen to them... eventually, but not at the top of my queue. But I'm not particularly invested in continuing the series. Not a bad series, just didn't particularly grip me.

snooze fest , cant remember what happened

So idk if its the story or narrator but this entire book went in one ear and immediately out the other. To be fair I often listen to audible when I'm gaming or going to sleep so I often lose parts of books and have to rewind constantly. that said this story was so unimpressive I didn't retain any info on my 1st or 2nd listen.

nothing special... sad but true

Don't get me wrong it's not BAD per say but it's not really all that great either... it just doesn't stand out in any real way. the characters are a bit flat and every problem seems to have a solution fall into place without any effort or struggle.. to me thats the fun of reading these types of books. seeing interesting characters doing interesting things.. and I just didn't get that here.
