About this listen

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Survivor, Lesley Pearse's stunning new novel in the best-selling and enthralling Belle series. Read by the actress Alison Dowling.

London, 1939: Eighteen-year-old Mari is defiant, strong-willed and selfish. She has craved independence her entire life and now, with the World on the brink of war, Mari has finally escaped the sleepy fishing village of her childhood in New Zealand.

After passionately falling for Morgan, the cockney steward aboard ship on her voyage to England, she hastily dismisses him in favour of being taken out by handsome young pilots in the glamorous West end. But, without warning, the Blitz blows her new life apart. Now Mari has the chance to make a difference but can she learn from her mistakes in time?

Great family saga

I listened to the three books - Belle, The Promise and Survivor and thoroughly enjoyed them. Very descriptive of times long ago. I felt that I was there with them and it brought back memories of my life.

Lesley Pearse back on form

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It's a good story which follows on from others although knowledge of the previous books isn't necessary. Lots of historical background and brings the war to the life of the ordinary. A touching saga that spans the world.

What did you like best about this story?

The reader gets to fully immerse themselves in the characters and over a long period of time.

What three words best describe Alison Dowling’s performance?

Compassionate, clear, adequate.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

One woman's battle, one world's war.

Any additional comments?

Lesley Pearse thrives in historical drama, her last book (Forgive Me), was contemporary and weaker than her epic history novels. I very much enjoyed this book, it was engaging and the story ticked along nicely. A few 'co-incidences' which weren't altogether plausible didn't ruin the narrative and the journey we take with the main character is interesting both as a book and historically. It's the third in a trilogy, but don't be put off if you've not read the others, this book stands alone perfectly well.
I'm not keen on the narrator but as the book is so good, it wasn't distracting.

Rarely fails.

I love the Belle trilogy and this 3rd is as good, if not better. I learn a lot about WW1 and II when I read Lesley's books. This story focuses on Bell's daughter, and he adventures from NZ to London, going through WWII, rise and fall, love and loss. I would recommend this, and as I see it there is room for further books PLEASE Lesley.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Any additional comments?

I had read the previous book and downloaded this to listen to in the car. I was finding excuses to go out for a drive as it was gripping.

Worth the initial annoying start

Would you consider the audio edition of Survivor to be better than the print version?

For me yes as I simply do not have time to sit and read.

Who was your favorite character and why?

You grow to like Mariette as it is great to see her develop as a person and have the ability to reflect back on her actions in earlier childhood.

Which character – as performed by Alison Dowling – was your favourite?

No real preference

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

At times yes, but that was because I grew up in Sidmouth so it took me by surprise this is where Mariette ended up. I knew all the places mentioned.

Any additional comments?

It is a great story with detail that brings the story to life during the second WW. The start is slightly slow and irritating but it shouldn't be missed as a follow on. A shame the narrator wasn't the same as the first two books.

Absolutely fantastic Trilogy, with performances that at times had me on the edge of my seat along with tears in my eyes.

Great book crossing across the world.

Just listened to this for about 6th time. It is a wonderful story, with so many extras, each time I listen I hear parts that were not there the last time I listened! Interesting about New Zealand and the life there. then London in the war, then spying then back to New Zealand. Lovely love story too running all through the book. Really recommend this read.

Enjoyable!

Great to follow the characters from the first book to this one the third. Enjoyable story.
Disappointed that 1 main character who had a Welsh accent in the first 2 books suddenly lost it in this book & therefore for me lost a little continuity. Granted the character was now living in NZ but she'd lived in London for more years & kept the accent.
