Summary
Start Where You Are is an indispensable audiobook for cultivating fearlessness and awakening a compassionate heart. With insight and humor, Pema Chödrön offers guidance on how we can accept our flaws and embrace ourselves wholeheartedly as a prerequisite for developing compassion. Chödrön frames her teachings around fifty-nine traditional Tibetan Buddhist slogans (called lojong in Tibetan), such as: “Always apply only a joyful state of mind” and “Don’t seek others’ pain as the limbs of your own happiness.” Through working with these slogans, we can begin to develop the courage to face our inner pain and thereby discover a wealth of freedom, well-being, and confidence.

Better buy paperback
I haven't finished this book yet, but I feel like I would enjoy it more if I were physically reading it rather than listening to it so I could go back and forth more easily. I do, however, really like listening to it, it's quite relaxing, but then I don't concentrate on what's being said!

Feels conceited
Personally I feel this comes across as arrogant and unnecessarily lyrical. I don't like the mildly superior tone and wandering verbiage.

No thank you
I admit, I was having a hard time understanding exactly what she was trying to convey, but from time to time a sentence or concept would make sense to me, and I was committed to finishing this book hoping that more clarity and understanding would come to me as I went along.
However, when she talked about, and put the image in my mind of a puppy being stoned to death and described the fear and pain it experienced at the hands of a cruel and laughing crowd I had had enough. Even though I know this and worse happens in this world, I do not need to be haunted by this image in my mind.
I am returning the book.

Very lovely book
Joanna’s voice is reminiscent of Pema’s which is really nice. I listened to it in two nights and I’m about to start it again :).

A whole new Perspective on life
I will definitely be rereading and listening to the book. I have struggled my whole life with self talk and how I treat others. The way she talks about befriending your emotions and being kind and gentle with yourself really helped me. But like she said it's walking the Wali and practicing it every day! Will definitely recommend!!

pema is great and the voice seems to match her
I did like the voice well enough, however she was a little monotonous or boring. maybe someone with a little more enthusiasm for the words could sound better. Pemas book is Fantastic.

Repetitive and disagree with some viewpoints
First two chapters were repetitive with the ideas being described. The "let it go" and "lighten up" was annoying to hear. I don't feel like this is a book I'll care to finish.
