Story
Though I was born with the ability to see the dead, I struggled with it until my brother was killed and his ghost was left behind. Now, I’m determined to figure out who is responsible for his death…the problem is that Detective Maddox Booker, the one working the case, is a grumpy and stubborn man who wants nothing to do with me and definitely doesn’t believe in ghosts. It doesn’t help that I keep finding myself looking ridiculous in front of the detective, thanks to interfering ghosts who enjoy laughing at my expense.

Some people are born lucky. Then there’s me, destined to be loved by the man who knows my darkest secret. My gift has followed me my entire life—the ability to see the threads of fate. I can see the red thread tying together two people destined to love one another. But my gift has another side to it. A darker side. After half a century of chaos, my retirement from leading the Community of Species Government has been bliss. No more hellhounds playing pranks. No more snippy demons demanding my attention. No more cajoling money from the wealthy to support the community. Just peace while I avoid my overbearing father and try to work out my next steps. Although...maybe three years of peace is enough. It might even be starting to get boring. For over 300 years, I’ve waited for fate to deliver my soul mate; the person I’d love for the rest of my life; the one I was destined to protect, to treasure and to cherish. The one to complete me. I never expected to find him dancing like an angel in my nightclub. The moment my eyes gazed upon his beauty, my heart was gone. The most mesmerizing thing about him were his eyes; he had the biggest, roundest doe eyes I’d ever seen. They were an enchanting shade of blue; the exact color of the Mediterranean Sea. The job at Sunday Orchard was supposed to be temporary. A chance to gain some work experience, to have some fun. I had not expected to be welcomed into a family of gorgeous and weirdly efficient lumberjack-types, or to find purpose in the tiny Vermont town whose claim to fame seemed to be apple-based products and copious amounts of charm. And I most definitely hadn’t expected to fall for Knox Sunday, my grumpy, burly, fifteen-years-older, reluctant roommate, with his infuriating lectures, his hot-as-fire body, his superior attitude - I’ve never been one to put down roots.

Story
Fate knows what they’re doing, right? Warlock Cornelius is almost 300 and is tired of being alone. When help is needed at a wolf pack out west, he’s quick to go - hopeful he will find his One there. Matthew is in awe about being in the human realm. Things are so very different than the fae realm he’s from. He was sent to Timber Valley, being told his mate was there, and he’s excited to meet his own sexy shifter. Only his mate isn’t a shifter...
Summary
Does a bear shift in the woods?
Well, partially. That was what got grizzly-shifter Ted Farnsworth into trouble. He wasn’t trying to break the Secrecy Pact. He just wants people to see the real him. So he signs up with the mate-matching service Supernatural Selection - which guarantees marriage to a perfect partner. Not only will Ted never be lonely again, but once his new beaver-shifter husband arrives, they’ll build Ted’s dream wilderness retreat together. Win-win.
Quentin Bertrand-Harrington, scion of an incubus dynasty, has abstained from sex since nearly killing his last lover. When his family declares it’s time for him to marry, Quentin decides the only way not to murder his partner is to pick someone who’s already dead. Supernatural Selection finds him the ideal vampire, and Quentin signs the marriage agreement sight unseen.
But a mix-up at Supernatural Selection contracts Quentin with Ted. What’s Ted supposed to do with an art historian who knows more about salad forks than screwdrivers? And how can Quentin resist Ted’s mouthwatering life force? Yet as they work together to untangle their inconvenient union, they begin to wonder if their unexpected match might be perfect after all.

Really good
So glad I found this author. This is the first book I've listed to by them but will be getting the next in the series. It's got a good flow, comedic moments and is just a lovely easy to listen to story about an unexpected couple.
Greg is always a great narrator, and this is no exception. A narrator can absolutely make or break a book but he did a brilliant job so thank you to him!

What a gem!
This book was a wonderful surprise. Great worldbuilding, riveting story, some snarky humor and interesting characters. I love Quentin and Ted. I’ve listened to other narrations by Greg Boudreaux, and liked them very much, but this narration is superb! The way he uses different voices, giving life to each character, is just… Wow! I bought the next two audiobooks before I even finished this one.

What a lovely book, funny, shifters and marriage, what more could we ask for? Oh yes, supernatural marriages that go wrong.
Ted wanted to marry a Beaver shifter to help him finish a cabin in the woods. Being a bear shifter himself, it seemed that would be ideal. However, paperwork was amiss, and he ended up married to an Incubus who was destined for a Vampire. So yep, we get to meet all sorts of shifters and sups.
I really enjoyed E.J. Russell's style of writing. It keeps my brain occupied all the time, and having it narrated by Greg finished it perfectly. Great book.
I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
Greg Boudreaux was a pleasure to listen to, clean and concise. I speed this narration up to 1.20 on Audible, which is usual for me.

4.5 Stars!
I absolutely loved this first book in the Supernatural Selection series! Funny story here, I read book 2 in the series a while ago, and have book 3 in my Kindle, but I hadn't read Single White Incubus yet. Bad Mari, I know, so many books and too little time. So, thankfully, when I saw the audiobook, I knew I had to listen to it.
Ted was the most adorable cinnamon roll of a bear shifter, a gentle giant, with more heart than brains (and I say this lovingly, because he was so sweet). It took me a while to warm up to Quentin, though, he was eh, not as charming as Ted, but once he started developing deeper feelings for Ted, he totally won me over. I just adored them together and I wish we'd have more page-time with them as a couple, but I was fairly happy with what we got.
I loved catching up with David and Alun, Mal, and Matt! And that scene with Quentin as Ted's advocate was all kinds of awesome!
Greg Boudreaux always does such a great job in his narrations, he has a huge range of voices and they're all amazing, which works especially well in ensemble-heavy books like this one.
Overall, Single White Incubus is a definite recommendation by me. It's a fun, engaging, steamy read, I was a bit annoyed at Quentin for a while, but I got over that and ended up rooting for him and Ted to find their HEA.

Matchmaking Gone Awry
Supernatural Selection is a matchmaker for, well, the supernatural. E.J. Russell has written many books about these creatures – many shifters, others with special powers – and I’ve enjoyed the audios that accompany them. I especially have a soft spot for the characters from the Fae Out of Water series and am always thrilled to see Alun make appearances and I truly enjoy his husband David who always just comes up with the best solutions to supernatural crises.
This story is about a bear shifter, Ted Farnsworth, and an incubus, Quentin Bertrand-Harrington. Both men signed up for the matchmaking services for different reasons, both signed their contracts without reading them carefully and – you guessed it – they wind up married to each other. Talk about opposites attract. Ted lives up in the woods and rarely goes to town. When he does, he’s apt to get into mischief because he’s so lonely. Quentin is incubus royalty from the East Coast who will very much be missed by the matron of the family who has no tolerance for antics like running off to marry so lowly bear shifter.
The men try to get the marriage ended, but that creates a whole new set of problems, and they soon realize maybe there was a reason the matchmaking service put them together in the first place. More pressing, however, is Ted’s troubles with his previous antics, and it’s up to Quentin to save him. With the help of a few friends.
I enjoyed the story – as I have all of Ms. Russell’s books – and I can recommend this one. Rounding out the pleasure is Greg Boudreaux’s lovely narration. I can’t wait for the next two books.

Loved it so much!
This is one of my favorite series, and I enjoyed a lot how the author created so many stories all part of the same world. Mr. Boudreaux made a wonderful job in this narration, and the way he brought all these beloved characters to live was outstanding. Ted and Quentin's fight to be together regardless everyone and everything is emotional, inspiring and of course, sweet and steamy. I loved every second of it!

A nice story, but not my favourite in this series.
This is the first in the Supernatural Selection series, but fourth in the overall Mythmatched universe. I will quickly list the reading order here as it is not obvious on Audible, Amazon or Goodreads that they are all related:
Fae Out of Water (Kendrick brothers)
1. Cutie and the Beast (also available on Audible)
2. The Druid Next Door (also available on Audible)
3. Bad Boy's Bard (also available on Audible)
Supernatural Selection
4. Single White Incubus (forms a duology with Vampire with Benefits)
5. Vampire with Benefits
6. Demon on the Low-Down
7. Howling on Hold (also available on Audible)
8. Possession in Session (a free ebook download from the author's website when you subscribe to the mailing list)
9. Witch Under Wraps (also available on Audible)
You could enjoy the Supernatural Selection series without having first read the Fae out of Water trilogy, but there is a lot of world-building that happens in those first three books, and all of the main characters are recurring through the rest of the books.
I first read the whole of Mythmatched just over a year ago, and I remember being delighted that the world had been continued beyond the Kendrick brothers' stories. I am similarly happy that these books are now being brought to audio.
This was my first MM paranormal/fantasy universe, and got me hooked on the genre, and MM in general. I have a fondness for the universe as a whole, but enjoy some of the books much more than others.
The premise of Single White Incubus is a fun one, and I love that it forms a duology with Vampire with Benefits, with the events in both books occurring concurrently. However, for a romance, I have to really love the main characters and the couple together for me to be truly ecstatic about the book, and that is not how I feel in this case.
I'm not a huge fan of Ted in this book - although I have to say that he redeemed himself considerably in my eyes in Howling on Hold. In this book he is really very childish, selfish, and - aside from what he can do for him physically - I can't feel that he's a very good partner for Quentin.
The things I really enjoyed in this book are how much Quentin loves Ted, and how fiercely protective he is of him. I was also really struck by both characters' use of the word "husband" as though it was a magic word, a dearest dream. It is such a treat to spend more time with the characters beloved from the Fae out of Water trilogy. I would certainly recommend this book if you enjoyed those three books, and also to set up the scenario for Vampire with Benefits. One of the MCs from that book - my dear, sweet Casimir - is one of my absolute favourite characters from the whole universe!
Greg Boudreaux's narration is, as ever, flawless. I am a big fan of his work, so I feel like my next words are a blasphemy.
Ideally I would have rather Joel Leslie narrate the whole of the Mythmatched universe.
It has been a while since I listened to the Fae out of Water series, and so gave this recording as fresh as ear as I am able. The truth is that had I not listened to the previous three books, I would be absolutely over the moon with this narration. However, I did listen to them, and Joel Leslie's work on those audiobooks are some of the best I have ever heard. Joel is particularly talented with the numerous nuanced British accents, and this was on full display in Fae out of Water, His accent work is exquisite in those books, and absolutely faithful to the text. Considering the number of recurring characters, I imagine it would be very jarring if I ever wanted to listen to Supernatural Selection straight after Fae out of Water.
Greg has done a brilliant job with this book, but it is difficult to have a change in narrator at any time, even when going from one exceptional narrator to another.

However Imperfect You're Perfect For Someone.
MM, Paranormal, Shifter, Urban Fantasy Romance. I laughed so much listening to this story, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I was cheerleading from the start. I loved the narration from Greg Boudreaux, he really did justice to the characters. There are a few angsty moments but overall it's light and sweet. Guaranteed HEA.

Great Novel in 4 Acts
This is a very enjoyable book. And it is very well crafted as literature should be; I am impressed with E.J. Russell. It has thematic sections, as my allusion to acts in a play, that move forward in growing excitement. Even the minor characters feel organically grown and real. I had inklings of the direction coming in each of the next "acts" and it gave me a kind of exhilaration through a subtle foreshadowing that I really liked. I know I'm fresh off the high of reading it so I hope I'm not overselling it, but even if I am due to being in the throes of just finishing that says fine things about it too. I hope you'll like it too.
The narrator, Greg Boudreaux, is good enough that I went immediately to his page and bought more books he's read. They have a similar supernatural themes to Single White Incubus but are by different authors. I'm sure Greg will do great justice to them all.

enjoyed it
📖 Story comment: Easy pace, likeable characters, enjoyed the story.
What i'd call light and fluffy - I listened to this before bed of a night over the span of a week and it was an easy and entertaining listen. Has me entertained enough that I will invest in the rest of the series.
🎧 Narrator comment: Greg Boudreaux is one of my favorite narrators and he's done a masterful performance bringing the characters and story to life. He suits the story and it's characters, he has good timing, rhythm, inflections and intonations and I had no trouble distinguishing the characters from each other.

Funny and silly
It’s a very middle of the road m/m romance. It is frustrating when they reference works in the same universe but from earlier series by the author. Like this isn’t the first book of a series but a second and I missed a lot of character and world development. Has cute moments and funny lines. Definitely not as hot as some other books

"Single White Incubus" is a fluffy opposites-attract, forced proximity story about two outsiders finding love with someone who complements them, sees them for who they are, and appreciates the qualities that others of their kind deem abnormal or irregular. As a spin-off from E.J. Russell’s Fae Out of Water series and the fourth book in her Mythmatched Worlds universe, I was hesitant to pick it up as I haven’t read any of those books, but it stands alone well. The characters from the previous series who show up fit into the plot naturally, and as there isn’t much that happens in the story, they serve as sources of color, insightful banter, and information. The world building is solid and incorporated into the characters’ lives as blood magic and supernatural shenanigans drive the plot conflict.
I’m intrigued by sexless/sex avoidant cubi (incubus & succubus) stories and found Quentin and his backstory to be compelling and sympathetic. As a member of the oldest and most powerful cubi dynasty in the “Upper” world, he comes from generations of wealth and expectations—one such expectation is endlessly marrying willing human hosts to keep him nourished. However, as a very empathetic incubus who cares about consent (too much according to his family) and after being traumatized by almost killing the only host he ever had, he won’t do it. He’s become a repressed, standoffish individual who values control, fears his nature, and has no support system as none of his family understand his “hang ups” and apparently consider discussing fundamental things about their existence indelicate.
Ted is extremely trusting, desperate for friendship, and sees the best in people, making him careless when it comes to secrecy; add in the fact that he doesn’t have the best memory or attention span and doesn’t think about consequences, he’s an easy target for his pack leaders, the Supernatural Council, and humans. As a character, he’s sunshiny, easy going, and likable. His simplistic outlook can come across a bit dismissive and insensitive at times, since even though he’s in hot water with the Council and admits to being uninformed about cubi, he brushes off Quentin’s worry about his openness, as well as Quentin’s fears about his nature and how it affects people he feeds from. However, Ted is never mean-spirited and is quick to apologize. They balance each other well as Quentin is organized, detail-oriented, and helps keep Ted focused, while Ted helps Quentin relax and feel more comfortable with himself.
Admittedly, it took me a while to get into it as I am not fond of bad/miscommunication-driven stories and pretty much everything in the plot could be cleared up with conversation. When the MCs meet, neither man is at their best, with Quentin falling into prickly snobbishness and Ted getting angry and storming off; they’re both adamant about correcting the partner switcheroo as quickly as possible, but don’t do the simplest things to solve it—from letting the person trying to help finish speaking, to constantly forgetting to charge phones/make calls. Fixing their situation is so difficult because they signed blood contracts without reading the final version, yet they remain cavalier about getting the escape clause specifics right despite the extremely severe consequences. However, once I started seeing the story as a comedy of errors, then all the many, MANY things that get hand-waved for hijinks and dramatic reveals are easier to accept.
There are some overarching intrigue/suspicions introduced towards the end that seem like they are mostly there as set up for how bureaucracy in this world works/later reveals in the series, as it doesn’t really have much to do with Ted and Quentin’s relationship. Honestly, I felt the page time could have been better spent seeing Ted and Quentin bond. Individually, there is plenty given to understand Quentin and Ted, and there is definitely enough there to show their chemistry and how they fit together. I just wish to have seen more of their relationship development. The pair fall in love in 19 days, but there are only a few of those days that the listener is privy to. Most of their on-page time together is the first couple of days, then a time jump to the day of the ritual where the MCs’ inner monologues convey their feelings and what they have been up to for the past two weeks. The MCs tell the listener they have strong feelings for each other, but also show how much they still don’t know about/trust in each other, so for me, the depth of their bond would have been more believable if there was more time with them not at odds and becoming friends.
However, Greg Boudreaux does a wonderful job portraying how intensely Ted and Quentin feel in all their moments together, as well as the different quirks each man has—from Ted’s irreverent teasing, to Quentin’s protective prickliness. Boudreaux deftly handles Ted’s boundless good cheer, benign carelessness, and tendency to pout, making the character’s extreme energy tangible. He also helps keep Quentin’s sometimes entitled and abrupt attitude and stiffness understandable, as well as showing how consuming his underling fear of himself and hurting people is. The narration speed is deliberate without being too slow and all the character voices are well-developed, distinct, and fit their personalities. Boudreaux’s performance helped keep me engaged in the story, and I can see people who enjoy light-hearted, instalove PNR featuring prickly MCs who just want to be loved and the good-hearted walking sunbeam that just wants to cuddle and sex them to pieces having fun with the audio version of "Single White Incubus".

It’s all about the vibe of the thing
This is my second, or third listen and for me, repeat listens or the desire for them equal best ratings.
This is a sweet tale of mismatched love and the acceptance and appreciation for being a bit different.
I have enjoyed this series and the Fae out of Water books.

A fun listen
What’s a bear shifter to do when he doesn’t want to be isolated? What does an incubus do when he doesn’t want to kill his partner? They go to a match maker of course. There are some clerical issues and maybe they jump the gun a bit to resolve the issue. It was fun and sweet. Greg Boudreaux was great.
