balancing act
the story is a mixture of a romance and crime drama. The romance is between a female police office who finds it hard to open up her emotions, and a physiologist. With the focus on a crime drama the two stories fit together, but I felt both seemed weak compared with other of her stories. Radclyffe does develop the crime drama well and demonstrates her strength in this genre. I did feel there as an edge missing from the emotional drama, and the soul searching is quickly passed through. The narrator Besty Zajko is clear and very good, there are some places where I felt the expression/tone did not match the actual dialogue. I guess this is an early radclyffe work, and it is good, but maybe not as good as later works of hers.

Highly recommended
My first book by Radclyffe and what a book to start off with . Really well written and the suspense and atmosphere was palpable . Great pacing in that the plot zipped along nicely and there was no needles redundant infill like in many books by lesser authors. The 2 main characters were brilliant and the secondary characters were as well written . There were a couple of plot twists are redirections which left me geuseing a few times at to what was going to happen .
Betsy Zajko's narration was great , her voice and tone really suiting the book and when she Wax narrating the intimate scenes , wow .
I already have the next on the series lined up and can't wait to listen

Shield is well read and AWESOME!
What did you love best about Shield of Justice?
As the first of the Justice books it introduces you to Rebecca Fry and Catherine Rawling::Hard boiled cop Rebecca and Dr Rawling hit it of as they class over the law and patient rights, It's almost love at first fight. I just love the way the writer let you get inside their heads and see Catherine over thinking every move like a psychiatrist would and then how Fries thinks like a cop does and how they both approach falling in love with the other. And how hard and fast they fall all to the background of finding this crazy serial killer/ rapist. And how they have to work together to do it. It's a great story and well read on audio, and Radclyffe is an amazing writer, can't be beat as a story teller,
What was one of the most memorable moments of Shield of Justice?
After Fries partner dies and she shows at 4 am on Catherine's door step coming from the bar where she almost drank. And they first take and don't talk but communicate. It's a great scene and the desperation to connect and grieve is so there it sticks with you. .
Have you listened to any of Betsy Zajko’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I think she did A Matter of Trust which rocked my world and is wonderful and very well done. As is Shield and I am so glad I listened to this. I am excited to listen to the rest of the Justice series that I have lined up to listen to, but haven't gotten to yet. I am Hoping MS. Zajko does all of them.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Hard boiled Detective faces off with Doctor over case and it's love at first fight. OK so not so hot a tag line. It's Awesome Just shut up and Read it. Doesn't work any better,
Any additional comments?
This is the weakest of the Justice series and it's still awesome. But it sets up all the rest of the stories so without it the other stories have no ground work. And really it's a great story it's just that the other Justice stories are just so awesome. But this one is good too, if a little predictable in places. I think I like Watts best, I know Rebecca starts off hating him but I like how he has a Joe Friday rumpled suit thing going for him.

This might have been a good book in print
I’m not sure. The narration was a miss. It was distracting. Maybe I’ll give this one another try, reading instead of listening.
Betsy has a nice voice. I’m sure I’ve listened to other titles she recorded and enjoyed them. But this one, she just didn’t bring the goods. Cadence is wrong, often. Inflection is wrong, often. It’s like she didn’t understand the material. Jokes were missed, dramatic parts were missed, emotional moments were marred by her odd timing or confusing voices.
I’m not sure what went wrong with this story. I know I’m disappointed.

Great Radclyffe book!
Shield of Justice has just the right amount of suspense and romance to keep me intrigued.
Yes, it does follow patterns of other books, but I enjoy every minute of it. Plus, TV shows, movies, books, and stories in general follow patterns. Duh! It is the content or elements that keep humans entertained and coming back for more. Radclyffe’s books give me what I want. ;-D
