Summary

Captured by raiders to be sold as a slave, Sofea narrowly escapes their ship and finds herself stranded on the shores of Israel. Bargaining her way to a city of refuge, she finds herself in an even more dangerous situation. Can she find safety in this city of strangers, accept their God as hers, and be satisfied with His justice instead of her own?

The daughter of a pagan high priest, Sofea finds solace from her troubles in the freedom of the ocean. But when marauders attack her village on the island of Sicily, she and her cousin are taken across the sea to the shores of Canaan.

Eitan has lived in Kedesh, a City of Refuge, for the last 11 years, haunted by a tragedy in his childhood and chafing at the boundaries placed on him. He is immediately captivated by Sofea, but revealing his most guarded secret could mean drawing her into the danger of his past.

As threats from outside the walls loom and traitors are uncovered within, Sofea and Eitan are plunged into the midst of a murder plot. Will they break free from the shackles of the past in time to uncover the betrayal and save their lives and the lives of those they love?

Voice and style of narrator let this book down.

I haven’t yet finished reading this book. I have gone back to reading it rather than listening. The voice and style of narrator is off putting and in my opinion doesn’t suit the story. I have read books from this author before and have enjoyed them. So the story so far is good but find the narrator off putting.
Sorry. 5/5 good storyline 2/5 narrator.

Shelter of the Most High

A great addition to this series. Hope there will be more. An excellent narrator. This author is so wonderful, that Biblical fiction is now one of my two favorite genres.

Stuck on this author

I discovered Connilyn Cossettes books based on Old Testament periods by accident. Her stories both intrigue and draw you into a different time period. I enjoy decent character development and story lines that grab your imagination in and this book has both. There is more context if reading the books in succession but they stand on their own. Weaving fiction around historical events is not usually my mainstay for fiction reading but Connnilyn does it in a way I find both honours the history and puts flesh on it. I give it a lower mark for performance simply because some of the voices used for narration grate a little.

A bit underwhelming

I'm a huge fan of Connilyn Cossette and the last 2 books before this one are stellar. Inreally likenhow her books connect but the story line in this one was a bit dull. I wanted to like it but more because of her past books but it was just ok for me.

Too many I perspectives

Originally the woman speaks in first person, then the man, then back and forth. The story and narration both take a minute to follow who is speaking. Makes the listener work to follow instead of enjoying the story.
