Removed from the concerns of the galaxy at large and regarding the Warmaster's unfolding Heresy with cold detachment, he has dedicated his hollow existence to the preservation of all the knowledge once held in the great libraries of Tizca, should mankind ever seek such enlightenment again. But his sons can see the change in their primarch - he is a broken soul whose mind and memories are slipping away into the tumult of the warp.

Story
Exile to the miserable world of Sedh, the disgraced Necron Lord Oltyx is consumed with bitterness. Once heir to the throne of a dynasty, he now commands nothing but a dwindling garrison of warriors, in a never-ending struggle against Ork invaders. Oltyx can think of nothing but the prospect of vengeance against his betrayers, and the reclamation of his birthright. But the Orks are merely the harbingers of a truly unstoppable force. Unless Oltyx acts to save his dynasty, revenge will win him only ashes.

After seven years of bitter war, the end has come at last for the conflict known infamously as the Horus Heresy. Terra now lies within the Warmaster’s sights, the Throneworld and the seat of his father’s rule. Horus’ desire is nothing less than the death of the Emperor of Mankind and the utter subjugation of the Imperium. Of all the Emperor’s sons who fell to Chaos, it is perhaps Magnus the Red whose tale is the most tragic. Sanctioned because of his desire for knowledge, chastised, judged, and shattered to his very elements – there is much for the Crimson King to feel vengeful for. Yet revenge is not the only thing that draws him to Terra alongside the Warmaster’s besieging armies. He seeks something, a fragment, the missing piece of himself that lies within the most impregnable place on the planet – the inner sanctum of the Imperial Palace.

Summary
Driven almost to the brink of self-destruction at Isstvan V, the Iron Hands now seek vengeance for the murder of their primarch Ferrus Manus.
Gathering survivors from the Raven Guard and the Salamanders aboard any vessels capable of warp travel, these Shattered Legions wage a new campaign of annihilation against the traitor forces across the galaxy - a campaign masterminded by legendary warleader Shadrak Meduson.
This Horus Heresy anthology contains 10 short stories by authors including Dan Abnett, Chris Wraight, John French and many more. Also, in the The Seventh Serpent, Graham McNeill revisits the ragtag crew of the starship Sisypheum as they are drawn into a war of subterfuge against the Alpha Legion.

...but this collection of stories endures! A fantastic collection of heresy era short stories from the various loyalist legions that managed to escape Istvan. Mostly Iron Hands but a nice little mix of everything. Well worth the price, was a great listen that gives you an idea of what happens to those few scattered groups of survivors.

Better than expected!
I've read / listened almost every book in the series so far, but at first I thought I'd skip this one, since some of the earlier shattered legions stories have been somewhat boring or poorly executed. I'm glad I didn't skip this one though, all the stories followed the same arc and were well written and read. There isn't anything that you must know to follow the series in this book, but if you are at all interested in the Iron Hands and stories of defiance and never giving up, I would highly recommend this book!

Enjoyed this so much more than I thought I would.
This reminded me of the original trilogy, much more heresy feeling than any of the recent siege of terra books imo. Heavy focus on Iron hands characters, with small salamanders and ravenguard bits, and some cool insight into the sons of Horus character Tybalt Mar at the end.

Wow!
This was a pretty solid adventure into the 40k universe. I was blown away by the pacing of the story, before I noticed I was inching up on 30mins left and was lamenting the ride was nearly over. It doesn't have a strong focus on the rest of the Heresy series, it's more like a spotlight being shown on the survivors of the drop site massacre and the effects on the greater narrative. Still, it's become one of my favorite books in the series. Give it a read if you love the Iron Hands.

Uncommonly bad
This is yet another short story collection, set in the aftermath of Isstvan and detailing the story of the Shattered Legions. Sadly, the overall quality is uncommonly poor, with several stories being more or less impossible to finish. Even the best stories in this collection only manage a dull mediocrity. This is unusual as I have found the other short story collections up to this point to have overall above average quality, there are usually some stinkers in every collection but also some true gems that pull the overall impression up. Not so with this one. Cannot recommend and will return.

A Fine & Relevant Collection
As the name implies, this covers the legions shattered at the Drop Site Massacre and related stuff but in a series of short stories that are mostly unconnected. While it doesn't involve the Emperor going on about his life story or anything particularly profound, Shattered Legions does offer perspectives of the Iron Hands centrally, Raven Guard, Alpha Legion, and a bit of Horus' boys.
Certainly worth a listen.
