About this listen

Jane Yellowrock has her hands full in the latest novel in the New York Times best-selling series that captures "the essence of urban fantasy" (SF Site).

Slaying vampires is child's play for skinwalker Jane Yellowrock. But handling the complicated politics of New Orleans' supernatural players is another story....

Jane is keeping the peace between visiting groups of witches and vamps in the city, but then trouble comes knocking on her door. When her house is magically attacked, the wild chase to find her assailants unearths a mystery that has literally been buried deep.

A missing master vampire, presumed long deceased, is found chained in a pit...undead, raving mad, and in the company of two human bodies. Now it's up to Jane to find out who kept the vampire hidden for so long and why, because the incident could tip already high supernatural tensions to an all-out arcane war.

I was really looking forward to this as I love the Jane Yellowrock series, but this was a real disappointment. I don't know what it was exactly, but it just seemed to be missing the its usual spark. The story was okay but not great, and the end felt very rushed. A real shame as, like I said, I love this series but this makes me think it may be running out of steam a little. I hope that's not the case and only time will tell, but this certainly isn't a promising sign.

Bit of a let down

Big Bad on the Loose.
One of the reasons I paused from reading the Yellowrock novels was because I could see what Hunter was doing, she was ramping up the power levels/threat index of both foes and Jane herself. Whether this is for artistic reasons or Hunter wants to give her fans more bang for their buck I don't know. Personally I Think it is a distraction from everything that made the earlier novels so much fun and enjoyable.

In this book we hardly “see” or “hear” Beast because the Big Bad can injure in this plane of reality and in Jane/Beast's SOUL home reality. Now me I LIKE Beast, and to have her sidelined is a red flag to me. And Beast likes Bruiser too! “Good Mate” Near the end of the novel Jane is actually in Danger, but within two sentences, threat is overcome and all back to the status quo.

A sort of resolution to the “Molly” problem – maybe. Leo definitely needs bitch-slapping. Eli is growing on me and his character can surprise sometimes, Jane and the reader too.

However, this time I got the book on AUDIBLE. It definitely improves the story, even the bits I don't like, and the narrator gives Bruiser a very sexy British accent and brings out some of the dry, deadpan humour dotted about in the prose..

I Have purchased the next AUDIBLE publication, if it succeeds I might not give up on the series.

Stirrings of life in the long running series.

another dash though the street of magical New Orleans . the Yellowrock team and friends are back doing what they do best, kicking ass and trying not to upset Leo and the witches, not forgetting the Law. The well thought out world of the skinwalker grabs your imagination and drags you in. although from a female perspective, the story is thrillingly full of action. Jane Yellowrock is able to stand with Harry Dresden and the Iron Druid, not forgetting the great English Rivers of London as some of the greatest series written.

Beast & Jane are back

Any additional comments?

I love this series. Faith Hunter has created a detailed and complex world.
The characters are well rounded and with the assistance of the narrator each has a defined voice.
This is a roller coaster with a multifaceted story, sections which made me smile and plenty of adventure. It takes a while before she (you) work-out who the baddies are and it is not immediately obvious but so appropriate. As the characters stem from one of the earlier books in the series.
I could do a detail discussion of the story line involving the witches, vamps and Jane's created family but I wont. No spoilers from me. I loved it and I will read it again. I know I will see even more on the second reading.
If you are so luck as not to have read the series then start it now.

Brilliant as Always

the story itself is rather short and simple when you compare it to the earlier books in the series.

khristine hvam narrates beautifully again

Good but not as good as others of the series

I really enjoy the Jane Yellowrock series. Jane is an excellent heroine, and it’s been a delight watching her gather her clan over the course of the books. Narration of the audiobooks by Christine Hvam is so good I’ve never been tempted to read the physical or digital book, relying instead on her voice to bring it all to life.

This book feels a little like it lost its way towards the end, with the ending feeling a little rushed compared to previous books in the series. Not enough to put me off the next book, because there is clearly still a lot to come in this series. I’m off to download the next :)

Felt slightly rushed, but great for Yellowrock fans

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this book but it didn't have the spark that most of its predecessors.
Because the others are so exceptionally good, this one only being good feels a bit of a let down.

I think its because it doesn't really add anything to the series, the characters don't really develop lin the way they do in most of the others - I wonder if its really just a setup book to get things in place for the visit of the European Vamps - presumably in the next book?

Good to have Molly and Evan and family in the story.

If you are a fan of these and have read/listened to the others in the series its certainly worth a credit but I am hoping the next one has the wow factor back.

Khristine Hvam is perfect as always

Good but not as good as most of the series

I'm so upset this is finished! Amazing!! Faith Hunter's books are so rich and multifaceted. Jane Yellowrock is an amazing character. So strong yet with a vulnerability that is not mushy but believable. I have had a roller coaster of emotions with this book. I've cried, laughed, nearly chewed my finger nails off with the action. There are very very few books that get a five review from me and even fewer five star reviews of book series but this is one of the few that get both.

I simply can't wait until the next book. Please please please hurry Ms Hunter!

I also have to pay huge compliments to Christine Hvam, wow what a narrator! She brings an already fabulous book to even better heights. Like a flawless diamond being polished and faceted by a master stone artisan. Perfection!

Just Get It!
