Why does it feel so natural to be compassionate and kind to those we care about - yet so hard to treat ourselves the same way? "Our culture teaches us to use self-criticism for motivation and to build self-esteem by constantly measuring ourselves against everyone else," says Dr. Kristin Neff. "We need to re-learn the essential skill of being genuinely nurturing and supportive toward ourselves."

Story
Throughout history people have sought to cope with a life that is often stressful and hard. We have actually known for some time that developing compassion for oneself and others can help us face up to and win through the hardship and find a sense of inner peace. However in modern societies we rarely focus on this key process that underpins successful coping and happiness and can be quick to dismiss the impact of modern living on our minds and well-being. Instead we concentrate on 'doing, achieving' and having'.

Drawing on the wisdom of Buddhist teachings, illustrative stories and the transformative power of meditation, Tara guides us in healing the shame and fear that bind our hearts. In the West, most of us have suffered the fear of not being 'good enough', feeling insecure about our appearance, our sexuality, our intelligence, our spiritual progress or - often most importantly - being worthy of love. When these feelings of insufficiency or self-aversion are strong, we fear abandonment and rejection.

What I really needed to hear and learn
I needed to listen to this book years ago. After suffering with severe mental health and now a recent break up with my fiancee, its very apparent how unhealthy I was being in both my relationship and to myself caused by events in my past that I refused to deal with. The past month, this book has helped me ground myself and start thinking of how to be better to myself and start to accept the reality of my situations.
If you feel lost in your life, feel like you aren't worth anything, aren't taking care of yourself, struggling with relationships or just feeling negative about the small things. Read this book and start learning self compassion. Start doing something to help yourself.
Thank you Dr. Kristin Neff.

Very Bad Reading
The reading was so bad that I had to try 3 times the first 30 minutes... but still couldn't go through. I think the author hired a "professional" reader which in my opinion was a bad idea. It's best to read this in a natural way, where real emotions are conveyed otherwise we branch off really easily and have a hard time focusing on the content. So unfortunately I wasn't able to continue and have given up. I have been looking for ways to give the audio back but couldn't find an option.
I then tried a sample from the same other but this time read by her and this I can relate to. So I am getting this other audio instead... Still a waste thought, very unfortunate!

An astonishing and life-changing book
This book was recommended by a friend when I was facing one of the most serious emotional crises of my life and I was close to a breakdown.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that this book (audiobook version, with its wonderful narrator) pulled me back from the brink and has set me firmly on the path to recovery, in conjunction with good friends.
For as long as I can remember, I have been my own harshest critic. Not only has this book made me realise that this was what I have been doing, and the harm this has caused not just to myself, but also to those around me, but it also provides real and powerful tools for turning this around.
I devoured the book in the space of less than a week, but already I feel so much better, so much more positive.
I’m extremely cautious about calling any self-help book “life changing”, but in this instance, the epithet is fully deserved. I cannot recommend this book highly enough – and now I have the paperback too for more leisurely consideration and doing the numerous exercises it contains.
Thank you, Kristin and Katherine.

Honest, helpful and no BS book
The past 3 years of my life I have been reading a lot of so-called self-help books that are on the market. I came into this completely new style with a bag full of sarcasm, more with the purpose of convincing myself that a lot of self-help books are total BS. And a lot of them are. But few of them are not. And this is one of the good ones.
What amazed me is the bravery of the author of putting her vulnerable self out there for the world to see. Personal stories that make most of us frown upon and judge. This level of honesty and vulnerability makes me want to listen and find out more.
The book opened my eyes even more into the depths of who I am (who we are as humans), took me on a journey I was not ready to take and came out of it with pockets of knowledge.
I even followed some of the exercises given in the book (which I rarely to nearly never do).
Self-compassion is indeed the answer to a lot of frustrations, desperations, blockages, sadnesses…it’s constant work and constant self-improvement, and it requires constant showing up.
I especially recommend this book to people going through depression, anxiety, people who have constant feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, but also to selfish and narcissistic personalities.

Simply Wonderful Book
This book is wonderful. In a world focussed on targets, efficiency and productivity this book brings Eastern and Western psychology on well being together in a secular way. There are over 30 exercises and the book is to be worked through and practiced as much as being read. Will you be more self-compassionate by the end? You’ll certainly have the wisdom to alleviate your suffering if you are prepared to commit to the practices suggested. Neff also backs up the suggested practices with well researched theory, honest personal accounts and relatable case examples. If you don’t enjoy the performance, definitely pick up a print copy and rad for yourself.
