Summary

When your fairy godmother threatens to enslave you with a curse - when a malevolent piper solves your rat problem but steals your children - when you seek revenge on the prince who turned you into a frog - who can you turn to in your hour of need? The band of scoundrels known far and wide as the Bastard Champions - the swashbuckling trio who travel a world of legend, seeking adventure and righting wrongs - as long as there's enough gold to be earned. They are Jack, the seemingly unkillable leader whose ever-present grin belies a dark past; Marie, who fights with fury but battles more fiercely to control the beast within; and Frank, the master of logistics, whose cloak hides horrific scars that are far more than skin-deep. As they slash and scheme through kingdom and village alike, the Bastard Champions uncover tantalizing clues to their ultimate quarry: the powerful Blue Fairy, who has made each of their lives a living hell.

Second Hand Curses adds a dash of sly wit and a heaping portion of action to the fairy tales you thought you knew.

Great fun!

As the father of a 4 year old daughter, who is just getting into her fables/princesses etc this was a fun alternative ‘reality’ after reading Disney’s Beauty and Beast for the 463rd bedtime!

How to stop curses

Rather to my surprise, I adored this book. It gallops along at a fair pace and some of the background of the characters is filled in, if only lightly.

Although I don't really like multiple narrators, this was handled with panache and style. Also not at a speed to detract from the book.

It's funny and lighthearted, regardless of some of the situations the characters find themselves in.

Highly recommended.

Entertaining take on the traditional fairy tales

I found this hard to get into as it's a bit too light to be gripping, but once I did, I found that the stories were good light hearted entertainment - the kind of thing that wont hook you to a binge listen but is great for dipping in and out of if you're doing something else at the same time. One criticism though is one of the narrators attempts at a cockney accent - sooooo bad. I do wish that if American narrators can't do accents very well they just wouldn't bother, because it's so jarring for British listeners.

Interesting story line, Drew Hayes delivers again. The performances are very well done and distinct, I heartily recommend this book, it’s subtle comedy and solid flow leaves you smiling throughout.

Very Clever & Entertaining!

As a fan of both traditional & rewritten fairy tales, I found the first book in this series to be a very clever twist on the originals, and just as gruesome! I looked forward to every new tale, to discover how the Bastard Champions righted the wrongs of each story gone awry 🙂 The narration was very good, just not as smooth at times as I would have liked. I loved that the chapters actually listed each tale, unlike some audiobooks where you have no idea which chapter is which by looking at them. I gave it 4 stars because the tales were a bit too violent for my tastes; however, I think I will try the next book even so, because it was just that well done!

Straightforward predictable

I was dissapointed by this book. If you know your fairy tales no suprises are left. Very predictable and extremely fast pased. No development of character or story line.

A shame really, the ideas have potential.

Most amazing story ever!!!!

Absolutely love it! One of the best books I’ve ever listened to or read. Love the character development and how bits are hinted at and all the misdirects. There absolutely needs to be a sequel!

Sub standard short stories

The book description is misleading suggesting this is a single narrative whereas it contains a series of average short stories with a very loose connecting theme. I would not have spent a credit on it if that were clear. Not recommended.
