Summary

In 1980 Thomas Keneally walked into a shop in Beverley Hills to buy a briefcase, an impulse that was to change his life. For the owner, Leopold Pfefferberg, had a story he'd been trying to interest writers and Hollywood in for years. It was the story of Oskar Schindler.

In Searching for Schindler, Keneally describes how he went on to discover the full, extraordinary tale of the Aryan who risked his life to save hundreds of Jews in Nazi-occupied Poland, interviewing many of the survivors around the world.

Here, for the first time, he fills in what happened to them, as well as to Schindler and his wife, in the decades after the war. And he gives a fascinating account of how his novel Schindler's Ark was published, its controversial winning of the Booker Prize, and the long road to its becoming the phenomenally successful film "Schindler's List".

Filled with entertaining anecdotes about the many people involved, from Steven Spielberg and Liam Neeson to Keneally's own family, Searching for Schindler gives a unique insight into the creation of a modern classic. Paying tribute to the irrepressible Poldek, it sheds renewed light on a remarkable instance of humanity amid the greatest inhumanity mankind has known.

Critic reviews

"Had I read Searching for Schindler before making the film, I may have made it an hour longer. I owe you so much. The world owes you more." (Steven Spielberg)
"A fascinating absorbing book, replete with anecdote and a quality of writing that continues to mark Keneally out as one of our finest living authors" (Herald)

As moving as it was informative

If you could sum up Searching for Schindler in three words, what would they be?

Schindler's full story

What was one of the most memorable moments of Searching for Schindler?

The first meeting with Poldek and the beginning of the unearthing of his story

Which character – as performed by Humphrey Bower – was your favourite?

Poldek of course. His voice was totally authentic and his quality of forgivness was one of the most life affirming experiences I have had while listening to any Audible book.

Any additional comments?

I cannot think of a presentation in any media that has affected me as much as this book. More than highly recommended this is the back story to a period of history that we cannot afford ever to forget. In particular the Jewish element of this book was fully explained in a critical but sympathetic manner. The reading by Humphrey Bower is a masterpiece in the tradition of great storytelling.

Herr Schindler

loved Thomas Kinelly reading this very moving emotional story. I have visited Herr Schindler‘s grave in Jerusalem. To this day he remains in my heart an enigma but a brilliant human being. I could NOT have done what he did. It us true his grave has stones around it. thank you audible.
