About this listen
The Stunning and Emotional Autobiography of an Auschwitz Survivor
April 7, 1944 - This date marks the successful escape of two Slovak prisoners from one of the most heavily-guarded and notorious concentration camps of Nazi Germany. The escapees, Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler, fled over 100 miles to be the first to give the graphic and detailed descriptions of the atrocities of Auschwitz.
Originally published in the early 1960s, I Escaped from Auschwitz is the striking autobiography of none other than Rudolf Vrba himself. Vrba details his life leading up to, during, and after his escape from his 21-month internment in Auschwitz. Vrba and Wetzler manage to evade Nazi authorities looking for them and make contact with the Jewish council in Zilina, Slovakia, informing them about the truth of the "unknown destination" of Jewish deportees all across Europe. This first-hand report alerted Western authorities, such as Pope Pius XII, Winston Churchill, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, to the reality of Nazi annihilation camps - information that until then had only been recognized as nasty rumors.

Couldn't stop listening to it
This was a very sad book on the accounts of one man Rudolf Vrba life -existence and then his successful escape from the clutches of the Gestapo in Auschwitz
We should never forget what these monsters did to innocent men, women and children! These monsters ended so many lives and disregarded them like dhit on their shoes!
This book made me cry at the inhumane way humans can treat other humans.

A perfect example of why the errors of the past must never be forgotten.
This is an epic and disturbing historical account of life, told by survivors of the Holocaust.
I certainly can't call it enjoyable. At times it is extremely heartbreaking.
There is a current trend to have disagreeable aspects of history airbrushed from being mentioned.
This audio recording is a perfect example of why the errors of the past must never be forgotten.
This is an invaluable historical resource.
The quality of the narration is excellent.

A really powerful book
While the subject matter was never going to be easy, the prose itself was absolutely beautiful. An unsentimental story of survival against the odds that resonates today.

Incredible heart breaking
One of the single most important books I’ve ever listened to. A chilling and heartbreaking account of one boy’s struggle to survive the worst massive murder ever committed. The graphic detail of the account left me dumbfounded and emotionally spent. I normally listen on the go to my audiobooks but this demanded my full attention from start to finish. The performance was incredible bringing the sorrow and terror to life.

So much I didn't know
Most of us have some knowledge about auschwitz but this blew me away. Its hard to say I "liked" the book, given the subject matter, but this book is beautifully written and narrated. Not over-dramatised, it is an account of what happened, how and why. I am so grateful I came across it and can't recommend it highly enough.
