Summary

She is the woman who clinched the 2019 interview with Prince Andrew described as ‘a plane crashing into an oil tanker, causing a tsunami, triggering a nuclear explosion'. Sam McAlister is many things beside: the first in her family to go to university; a trained barrister; a single mum; a master of persuasion. In her former BBC colleagues' words, she was the ‘booker extraordinaire', responsible for many of Newsnight's exclusives over the past decade, including Stormy Daniels, Sean Spicer, Brigitte Hoss, Steven Seagal, Mel Greig and Julian Assange.

This is a backstage pass to the most unforgettable journalism of our times.

What an insight

I’m so happy I found this book. It’s the kind of insight that will help so many up and coming producers understand what’s required and inspire. Well done Sam. Can’t wait to see what you do next 🙌

Utterly compelling

the Prince Andrew chapters read like a thriller. but this book is much more. for anybody who watches TV interviews with important figures or listens to radio equivalents, this will give you a great insight into what makes them happen. along with the personal observations of household name interviewees over the years, this book is a brilliant snapshot into the life of of a producer. it also hints at failings in the BBC which lamentably are likely to become more acute. well worth listening to those observations as well

Fascinating insights!

It was interesting to hear a first hand account of life at the BBC and ‘that’ interview which has shaped part of the Royal Family’s present.

Always thank the producer!

A really excellent insight into what goes on behind-the-scenes at the interviews that have captivated audiences the world over. I enjoyed how the author dug into the painstaking process of working with agents/PRs/aides/fixers to secure interviewees. Persistence pays off! Very well narrated, too. Would recommend to any journalist or aspiring journalist.

Engaging & well read by author

I enjoyed Airhead by Emily Maitlis, this book is also excellent and well worth a listen. Lots of interesting behind the scenes details on a wide range of interviewees and well read by the author. Highly recommended.
