About this listen

Patricia Dixon is the best-selling author of the psychological thrillers Death's Dark Veil and Over My Shoulder as well as the emotional women's fiction novel They Don't Know. Rosie and Ruby is an unmissable and heart-warming novel which will appeal to fans of authors like Amanda Prowse, Diane Chamberlain and Lucy Diamond.

Ruby lives on a run-down, crime-infested estate in Manchester, with Stella, her feckless, self-centred mother. Rosie, Ruby’s cousin, leads a middle-class existence but feels suffocated by her domineering mother, Doreen. Although Stella and Doreen have little in common, they share the inability to show the love that their daughters deserve. Meanwhile, Olivia, a member of the elite Cheshire set, is aloof and distant, rattling around in her sprawling mansion, attending charity functions and hosting infamous bridge nights. Her errant son Marcus lives his life in the fast lane, maximising the perks of the family firm whilst enjoying his jet-setting bachelor existence, away from his disapproving mother. But when Ruby meets Marcus her life begins to crumble, and one by one the secrets she has kept are exposed.

This was a well written story, a story like a modern day fairytale. A psychological thriller though it was not. Half way through I realised it was more a romance novel. If you are looking for a romance novel, a darker one but with no erotic element this would be a great bet.

I had been looking for a thriller though, as per the synopsis. which is why I've scored it as I have. I was disappointed and it was very obvious where the plot was heading, beautiful though. The stereo typing of council estate residents did feel a bit judging and middle class too.

Felt a bit cheated

I found the narration to be at times, painful to listen to - it almost sounded robotic.

The story was ok, but pretty formulaic

Slightly robotic narration and simple story

I think it was at least two hours longer than it should have been. Close to the end the end it became a little bit boring.

Good but little bit boring at the end
